Remington Autoloading Rifle (pre-Model 8)

Hello! I recently picked up this very clean Remington Autoloading Rifle dated 1910 in 35 Rem, which makes it pre-Model 8. The rifle seems to be in immaculate/pristine condition with a less common (yet desirable) pistol grip stock. Either this rifle was kept in a protective case for the last 113 years and never used or it has been refinished.

I haven't taken ownership of it to see if it went back to the factory. What should I be looking for? In any case, it looks great.

Is the stock/butt plate original to the gun? It has a unique rear sight, which I haven't seen before. Thoughts?

Congrats on your purchase. I saw that rifle when listed.

My opinion is that it's a tastefully well done restoration. I could be wrong, I'm sure some experts will chime in. I wasnt sure if there was interference with the sight in the photo. It may be a rare rear, possibly custom sight.

As i said earlier, my opinion. I haven't seen the pictures on the laptop in a while "on my phone right now".

If it went back to the factory- there would be a repair code on the left side of the barrel shroud. The guns seemed to transition from the Remington Arms buttplate to the Rem UMC 1911/1912 if memory serves me right. The buttstock could very well be original to that gun. You would look to see if the trigger guard serial number "underneath the wood" matches with the gun.

Until you take ownership you won't know some details. I'd sure be proud to own that example you bought!

Hibby, thanks for your comments. It does look too clean to be original. Thats some shiny wood!! I got it for a fair price so I'm not complaining.

True. The gloss finish on the wood is what has me thinking that along with the bolt handle appearing to be blued.

Good catch on the bolt handle. I hadn't noticed that.

It appears a portion of the barrel (shroud too) has been blued.

No mistake, tell tale sign there.
If you so choose, it wouldn't be hard to remove the blue from either of those so it looks more correct.

I'm thinking that might be the Redfield rear sight.

Looks like the wood is kind of low around the rear tang to maybe from sanding ? Hard to tell with those pictures. Still a real nice looking old gun !! Congrats on getting it !! John Taylor

Thanks. Oh well. At least the restoration job looks to be done nicely and hopefully all the internal parts are present and she works fine. I don't plan to "fix" her. She looks fine as is, albeit restored. I always wanted a stock like this one. Hard to find in the early Model 8s.

Well I picked up the old girl today. As we thought, its completely refinished but a nice job. One issue I noticed immediately is the bolt not locking back. When I pull it back, it just goes forward. I did a quick search on the forums but I couldn't find a good answer. Any idea what is wrong?

The first thing that comes to mind is that the magazine indicator spring is not in the slot.
Check that first.

Others on this forum know a lot more than me, I am sure there are other reasons, but that has always been the reason when I have encountered this problem.
