Model 8 Barrel Service Tool (FN Style)

Post by 1913Model8 »

Hi everyone, I have a big announcement: After many years of thinking about making one of these tools and getting it into people's hands, I can now say I can provide these tools. It's been a dream of mine now for 5 years to get this into reality.
After many prototypes and trial and error, we are pretty excited to have a tool that replicates what FN did with these tools but I do believe we made it better. Adding knurling for when your hands are oily, a larger top for fitting in your palm better. We kept the same idea that FN did with a roll pin to hold in the Pilot Shaft, We made the shaft longer as it helps in holding the recoil springs straighter in line during both assembly and disassembly. Each one is made by hand on a 1920's lathe and more modern mill, this means each one is close to each other but also unique.

Congrats on your work and tool, looks very well made. Will have to contemplate possible purchase. One thing curious about, were the original FN tools caliber geared as yours is or were they one size fit all. Have never read about them being caliber sensitive. I assume by looking at the various shafts you have available they increase in diameter from 25 to 35 and assume this is to keep any play/movement when disassembly/assembly. I have two 300 Savage rifles and one 35 Remington, all 81's so I assume the 35 shaft will not fit in the 300 barrels but the 300 shaft would have a bit of slop in the 35. See you do offer additional shafts for owners of more than one caliber. Nice addition for 8/81 owners, two thumb's up and five stars your way.

Thank you very much. We are not sure about the FN tools in exactly how they were done.
Canuck on here measured his full set of rifles and all of his barrel caps he said were the same, probably around a .001 off or so. I do not know if his was a mix of 8 and 81 rifles. This confirms the idea that all of these parts were made common. (barrel jacket, barrel bushing nut, barrel cap exterior)
Yes you would need 2 shafts, For your case you would need to purchase 1 extra shaft, A Kit comes with one shaft of choice, then add another shaft of your size to the cart. If for some reason the tool body wouldn't fit over the barrel cap, send it back to us and we will fix the fitment. This needs to be a very close tolerance fitment to avoid cross-threading when reassembling.

I ordered a tool from TJ a week or so ago and finally got around to using it the other day. I have to say, this thing is absolutely top notch! You can definitely tell a lot of thought was put into the design and manufacturing of it. It works flawlessly! Favorite feature is the ability to remove the handle allowing you to hand-tighten the barrel nut and bushing, before final tightening.

Kudos on such a great tool and wonderful contribution to the community.
