Remington mod 7600 D grade

Post by 54bullseye »

Here is a nice Remington "not an 8 or 81" but a 7600 pump gun. This one a D grade made in 1992 in the Remington custom shop. It has really beautiful hand checkered wood and very nice clean hand done engraving !! It is in 308 win caliber not real common in 7600s but not rare. I do believe this is a scarce if not rare gun in that it is a D Grade. I have scoured the internet to find other 7600s in high D or F grades and I can't find one ???? I have a copy of Gene Myskowski's book on Auto Loading and Pump Rifles and he mentions in it they did make both the 7400 and the 7600 in the higher D and F grades but I can't find another ??

Please if there is anyone who owns or has seen a high grade 7600 post it if possible or let me know.

I bought this gun from a friend and another "great model 8" member who I thank very much !!

I am going to post a bunch of pictures and I hope you enjoy them !! Seems like not a lot of activity on the forum lately so here you go. Thanks for looking !!! John Taylor

I forgot to add that the original owner installed a nice Leupold quick release base to the rifle and topped it with a neat "Safari Style" VX III 1.5 X 5 powered scope. It also has a 20" barrel not common to the 7600s !! The carbines were 18.5" and the rifles were 22" barrels.

It's a sweet little rifle !!!! John Taylor

I know your high grade guns have a wow factor, but that 7600 is gorgeous!!! It's a mix of the "well done" subtlety of the D grade engraving and the wonderful stock set it has. The low profile scope & mount seems the perfect setup.

I've tried finding high grade 7600's and have come up with nothing in my searches.

Thanks for sharing John.

A sweet rifle indeed! The 308 chambering makes it really interesting as well as the 20 inch barrel. Very unique, and that is some beautiful walnut that sets off the engraving perfectly.

Thanks for those photos, John.

I recently talked to the original owner of this gun on the phone he resides in Arizona. He is thinning his gun collection down because of age and he is just not using them as much. He ordered this gun new in 1992 from the custom shop. He requested the 20" barrel and Tim McCormack the Supervisor of the custom shop at the time assured him it was the only 7600 with a 20" barrel he would see !! He also requested the gold oval inlayed into bottom of stock whit hid initials engraved in it.

He owned the gun until 2023 and did hunt with it. He told me he shot a couple bears with it in Canada a few mule deer in various states and a real nice whitetail in South Dakota. He also told me he bought the Leupold quick mount base and VXIII 1.5X5 scope with the lowest rings available at the time but when mounting scope to base the bottom of the swelled area around the turrets was touching the base. So he had his machinist mill the base down very slightly so nothing touched when secured down. Then the base was completely reblued so you would never know it was done. You can see light between scope and base but barley enough to fit a piece of paper through.

His reasoning was to get lowest sight path to barrel possible. Anyway I guess I am the third owner to the gun and am very proud to own it as it is a beautiful rifle !!

Now you know the rest of the story !!! Thanks ! John Taylor
