project cartridge change

Post by Hibby83 »

Howdy gents.

Close to the end of my visit with 54BULLSEYE last month, he asked if I was up for a project. Of course, I said yes. Little did I know, he wanted to give me a an early Remington 81. I felt pretty darn lucky and was extremely grateful!!! Before leaving to come home I asked again if he wanted anything for it, he said no, just fix it up.

Story on the rifle- it was setup as a 300 Savage, must've been switched at some point and it needed a couple parts. Have I mentioned this gun is in exceptional condition? It's a prime example of an early 81!

Considering the condition of the rifle, I didn't want to put a poor condition spare barrel on the gun. I decided to make it 30 Rem, correct for the era. With that, I broke down my only nice spare barreled assembly "a spare F.B.I barreled assembly" and took the barrel from it.

In short, it took some trail and error along the way doing a full on swap. I didn't want to rush it, so after a failed attempt, or two, I would take a few day break from working on it. The one bolt carrier wasn't happy with the bolt, I switched it out for a different one. On what I thought was the final dry run, I realized that the side springs needed more tension, holding the cartridges in properly. Now all dry cycles show proper function, time to shoot it. Out back of the house I fired 22 rounds without issue.

Enough talk, here's a few pictures

Very nicely done! The rifle looks great, I am glad to hear it functions well, too.

Thanks for the photos. Did you or John ever fire it as a 300 Savage?

Thanks Dan!

I don't believe John ever fired it, I did not fire it as a 300 Savage. Since it's an Early 81, I figured that it should be 1 of the 3 original chamberings.

The barrel and shroud supporting components for the 300 Sav. are in great condition. I just wanted it era correct.
