Scoping an 81

Post by PremierGrade »

We've all seen the nasty side mounts jobs that both kill value and are rather unhandy.

Got to thinking, why not a Scout Scope setup like Redfield used to make for the Winchester 94 ?

One thing lead to another. I discovered a EGW rail for the Savage 25 has the same contour as the as the barrel sleeve. Some new holes in it allowed it to use the rear sight screws. Some aircraft epoxy will ensure it stays on. (Easily removable with a needle torch). Burris Signature rings and a Vortex 2-7 Scout scope completed the job.

Should help this old man hit something with the 30 !

Looks like you have it figured out. I hope it holds the scope well enough for you.

That lot of vintage ammo you have with it looks pretty darn cool. That 81 is a beauty.

I would not trust the posts and screws alone.
Mine has NASA epoxy under that whole long rail as well.

Took it off to range and ran some RP 150 gr loads down range.
No great surprises, 5 in 2" @ 50, 4" @ 100.
Once I get around to handloading it, things may get better.
Would love to find some of the stripper clips as it's a pia to load !

And now I just snagged NIB Stith 7/8" mounts for M141 and M81 and 94 Winchester.

Do I have to buy more rifles and Alaskans ? :D
