My first FN 1900 "somewhat modified by Bubba"

Post by 54bullseye »

I couldn't pass it up as it's the only one I have seen and had a chance to buy. All in all not bad but nothing like Canuck's newest FN or some of Jack's beauties ! This one has certainly seen some use and gone through some repairs and retrofitting by the man himself Bubba  !!!

First off the tang mounted peep sight. This I can live with and it's actually a cool peep sight and it's unlike any I have seen before.

Second the bolt handle has a hex head nut attached. It still works as it should if you get your fingernail under the nut and lift it has a spring loaded pin that allows bolt handle to be removed. I believe I can have my machinist make a pin the way it should be and the correct looking retainer nut. If any one has an old pin or retainer nut that I could borrow so my machinist could get it exact that would be great ?? The rest of bolt handle looks correct.

When the older gent that I bought it from originally bought it there was a scope mount soldered to left side of receiver which he heated up and removed. The older gent forgot to mention the alignment hole behind the mount. That is pretty darn bubba looking for sure !!! Not sure what I can do with that. The older guy did not keep the scope mount unfortunately.

The butt plate has a tiny 1/4" crack above upper screw. That I think I can make go away pretty easily !!

Last the checkering has been worn through usage and then Bubba added a coat of varnish and forgot to clean excess from checkering. Checkering could possibly be chassed by the right guy but will never be like new that's for sure.

Some of the good things =
Both original sling swivels are present.
Both front and back sights look original and rib is in decent shape.
Bore looks very good.
Also without shooting it the action seems to cycle good when done by hand.
It has some pretty wood with only one very fine short 1/2" split to right hand side of upper tang.

I am sure happy to have found a half way decent example of the FN 1900 to add to my collection even with it's issues I love it !!! Hopefully I can improve some of it's issues.

I am going to post a bunch of pictures please enjoy !! John Taylor

No need to dis anything about that rifle, I think she looks great! (I have some worse examples in my bunch for sure)
That peep sight is sure neat, any name on it?
Too bad the scope mount is gone, those period scope mounts are very intriguing to me and I'd grab every example I could find but I've yet to find a rifle with one attached.
Congrats on your FN!

canuck: I can't see any name on the peep just increment marks for adjustments. I have never seen one like it at all. I will take it off when I start working on it and see if there is any name anywhere on it. As far as the scope mount goes it was the first thing I asked the seller about when he told me he took it off !! He said I am 92 years old and sometimes I can't find my way home never mind a scope mount  I actually bought the gun without any pictures and just with his description. Not smart I know but he couldn't take or send them and I didn't want someone else to scoff it !!! Price was reasonable so I bought it. The gun sold some years ago through Amoskeag Auction Co. and Cam had one picture of it that was in his archives on FNs so I had the one picture but gun was already on it's way

The things he forgot to mention were the hole under scope mount and hex nut on bolt. Anyway I am still pleased to own it ! John Taylor

So glad a forum member ended up with this! Congrats! Hey...any FN is a treasure and that one has so much character. If it could talk!

When it originally sold via Amoskeag in 2017 the scope mount was marked "J.ALBRECHT/DETMOLD". Never heard of that one :D

Nice score 54Bullseye! That’s a good looking rifle.

One of these days I’ll find a 1900.

I haven’t searched the net to help figure the brand of peep sight yet. It certainly is cool & unique looking.

Well I got one of Bubba's repairs back looking the way it should. Thanks so much to Jack for letting me use his parts to have my machinist copy them making me the bolt handles pin and cap screw back to original looks. The first 3 pictures I am posting was Bubba's fix and it did work perfectly !!

Great story. Happy that a member from the community was able to help you. Awesome looking copy from the machinist. Certainly look like a bonafide F.N part.

Isn't it crazy how fixing the bolt handle literally changes the look of the entire gun?! It looks SO much better. Kudos to Jack and your machinist.

Hey John,

You did well with replicating the orignal cap and pin. I was glad that I was able to assist you with getting the FN back to looking so much better to the original. These rifles are hard to find and even harder to buy.

Kindest Regards,

Jack
