Can't help on that one. I have only seen the Model 14 and one other rifle "can't remember at the moment" that used the dial elevator.

Cool score!

When you first posted the picture 54bullseye I recalled seeing an older rifle within the last couple of years at a gunshow with this style of sight (dial elevator) but couldn't recall. This morning it hit me after yours and Hibbys latest posts, it was on a Model 14 Rem pump. Checked GB and Guns International sites for Rem pumps with this style of sight and found various models and submodels with it. Various 14's, 14 1/2 (carbine version of the 14) and 141's had it, mostly with the buckhorn style. They ranged all the way from the standard models of these guns to the higher letter numbered 'fancy' engraved models.

Tried to find something on the web about the history of the sight with Remington but couldn't-more than likely there somewhere. Some forum member should have the 'skinny' on them. Thinking maybe this could have been an extra price option and/or was offered for sale by Remington and current Rem owners bought and changed. Did see several old eBay posts where the owners lowered the prices to $199 and $225 respectively for them in the last several months, both were sold.

Like has been said it is likely of a Remington 14 or some variation. I think it was called a Dockendorff rear sight. Savage put them on some rifles as well don't know if they were an optional thing or standard for Savage rifles though.

Hey Mike, got curious about your post and the 'Dockendorff' sight and did a search on them. The Dockendorff was the same principle as the sights 54bullseye posted about but were of a different construction. They appear not as heavily made and though they have a wheel elevation are designed differently. Didn't see any other Dockendorff models or designs.

You're right now that I look a little closer. Same design, different execution. Can't see the aperture being very useful on a barrel sight. A long ways from the eye to the aperture. Never tried one personally, just my impression.

I did some searching early this morning about Remington and the wheel sight as it was called (#117-1/2) and apparently it was available on Model 14's until 1927, then dropped. A few sources indicated it was installed on some factory rifles but could also be ordered with rifle or purchased as an aftermarket purchase. Was not available for the later 141 rifle, but any found on them was installed after factory. Couldn't find any evidence of being installed at the factory on any Model 8 or 81's, so any of those models with one are after factory I assume are owner installed.

Never found anything if they were manufactured by Remington or who made them. Several posts indicated Remington dropped them in 1927 due to the fact that they were a low rear sight and had a low front sight which made for a poor sight picture, especially in low light conditions. According to various posts, Remington replaced the front and rear sights on the Model 14 in 1927 with a rear sight numbered 701-1/2 and installed a higher front sight. Alot of the sale posts online had information blocked or a 404 page came up.

I got alot of the information from the parent site of this forum "The Remington Society"-did a search for 14/141 rifles and the Remington wheel sight. About all I could find, sure there is more info out there somewhere in cyberland.
