Model 81 Broken Action Spring Tube

Post by tygsmith98 »

I acquired a Remington Model 81 in .30 Remington a few weeks ago. The rifle externally is in about 70%+ condition, it sat wrapped up in a blanket in a barn for years before being sold at an estate sell. The problem I had during disassembly is that the action spring tube broke inside the gun. Any tips on removing it without damaging the threads? Thanks

I haven't had that issue. I imigine one of few types of straight profile extractor tools could do the trick. If you plan to do it yourself take utmost care not to damage the gun. If you feel its above your level, consult with gunsmiths that know their stuff!

In case you didn't know you have a VERY rare Model 81. It is an F.B.I model.

Would you be willing to share the serial number of that rifle to be added to our database of existing FBI rifles?

UPDATE:
After taking Hibby’s advice I reached out to my father about the tapered screw extractors and modified a 3/8 extractor to get the broken action tube up WITHOUT damaging the threads! Hopefully this helps someone else out down the road. Now I just need to order a new action tube!

Great news it came out easy for you. Have you found a replacement action tube yet?

Do you have any more pictures you care to post showing the gun off?

I plan on it once I get the new tube in and I clean the gun up to make it look more presentable. Not to mention replace old springs and look to see if there’s any other broken parts.

Ty
when you get the tube, don't use red or blue loctite on threads, too much chance of peeling thread.
Loctite makes a small screw formula that is great for sights & stuff, I just forget the number. I've posted it in other threads just search mine for loctite.

I have an FBI barreled assembly with front sight (no rear sight provisions) for the early model. Bluing is 90% with some freckles, not too bad about 15% coverage, barrel excellent except for a one inch spot where something was left behind and collect moisture.
