Model 81 on GB

Post by Mikeshoe72 »

Happy Holidays to all!! Saw a Model 81 today on Gun Broker in 300 Savage, sn in the 20,000 range. What struck me weird was the fact it has a straight stock like a model 8. Appears to be factory because of the larger 81 metal butt plate. Without having the guy take apart the gun to verify serial number stamps, I guess there is no way to tell. I’ve have never seen an 81 with a straight stock before. Special order I suppose.https://www.gunbroker.com/item/962322239

I don't know if the stock is factory, but I have a Model 8 made in 1922 with the same compass in the same location as the one shown on GB.

Definitely some "franken-guning" going on there. For one, practically every screw head and pin are boogered. The wear of the trigger plate and magazine are drastically different. The forearm, stock, and trigger plate are all obviously Model 8 items.

Kind of what I thought. I’m tempted to message the guy to see if he’ll take butt plate, stock and fore end and see what sn”s they are. More for curiosity than actual buying

I collect 14’s and 141’s as well and have come across many model 14’s with 24” 141 barrels (14’s had 22” barrels) the few I’ve seen all had factory Remington repair codes, leaving me to believe that they had barrel replaced at the factory after 14’s were out of production.

I’m always curious when I see odd variations, but most usually turn out to be “Frankenstein-guns”!!

definitely a frankengun of sorts.

81 receiver and barreled assembly with model 8 trigger guard and stock set. The safety appears to have been repaired. It's a straight gripped shooter.

It's not the worst shape, not the best. I certainly wouldn't pay anywhere near the price that's being asked.

Here's an oddball to go with the post.

A MODEL 8 chambered in 300 SAVAGE ''not factory of course"

The monte carlo buttstock looks pretty decent, no use for a lefty like me though. I sighed when i saw the forearm. I suppose the prior owner thought it was a neat/good idea to do some sort of design. To each their own! Have to wonder if he struck each individual hole or used a type of roller, or or or???

That could be factory, I notice it has a factory repair code stamp on the barrel of 1950. I’ve heard Remington would rebarrel models 8’s to 300 Savage (and whatever else it took to convert to 300) at customers request.

Btw, I asked the gentleman on the Gb auction to verify the serial numbers, he declined to take butt plate off. Said he didn’t want to mess with it.

Red Flag for sure when the seller doesn't want to possibly revel something about his firearm that isn't right and/or detracts from its value. Have had that happen on GB alot when they either ignore a question or write back and blow it off.
