I'm new to the forum, but have enjoyed learning the history of the Great Model 8! I wish that I had asked my father about the history of this rifle, that has been in my family for over 100 years. It's been sitting in a gun cabinet untouched, since the 1950's, and it's time to find a home that can appreciate it. In order to sell it, I need to understand what I have, as I don't want to misrepresent it. The manufacture number, in front of the magazine, is 22097. I believe that indicates a manufacture date of 1910. If someone could confirm that, I would really appreciate the help! It's chambered in .35 Remington, and with the exception of missing the peep sight, appears to be in very good condition. Thanks in advance, for any help that you can provide!

Very cool that the firearm has been with your family that long. I bet the rifle has some good stories under its belt.

According to the manufacture dates posted on the page your Model 8 was manufactured in the very beginning of 1911. Being so close I guess there’s a chance it could’ve been late 1910.

From the photos your model doesn’t appear to have been fooled with, it appears to be original. The buttplate yours has looks to be an uncommon variant.

Thank you Hibby83. I'll take some pictures, and send them for you to inspect. I believe that both my Grandfather, and Dad, used to hunt deer and elk with the rifle. It's definitely not a museum piece, but I hope to look as good when I'm 110 years old! A pretty remarkable firearm for the day!

When ur drawing down down on a running white tail you don't even notice the recoil. Just waiting for those 200 gr 35s to pile him up.

I have to agree. I’ve hunted deer in every caliber of M8s and M81s. The only time recoil was any problem for me, was testing hand loads at the bench in the rest of the year. When a deer is in your sights, running or standing,you don’t notice any recoil.

What makes this a model 8-C as it is clearly marked in one of the pictures? https://www.gunbroker.com/Item/907021176 I thought grade "C" included checkered buttstock and forearm. Be safe and enjoy life.

You are correct.

I did see the auction you posted a link to. I can only assume that the original furniture has been removed or the the barreled assembly from the original gun has been put to use on that particular gun. The wood on that specimen doesn't appear to be of a higher grade nor does it look like it was checkered.
