Tulsa Trip--Jackitis Bad
Tulsa Trip--Jackitis Bad
Hey Guys,
I had a wonderful time in Tulsa at the Gun show. My son, nephew and another friend joined me on the trip. All of us were wore completely exhausted and I could not have done it without my "gun bearers". There were more 8's and 81's this year than what I saw in past shows. Prices were up from the past. I had to pass on several opportunities due to costs constraints.
I have asked 81police to post the pictures for me and he graciously agreed. This is a lot of work for him and I made it harder because all my pictures were not oriented correctly. I have give 81police a challenge to comment on a removable magazine rifle and am waiting to see his comments.
I was able to acquire 8 rifles and was, as you can imagine, excited to add these to the collection. I was able to get a FN 1900 no rib barrel, model 81, with an unusual removable 6 shot magazine, model 8-D grade, model 8 factory engraved and factory checkered custom rifle, model 8 round knob pistol grip grade C, model 8 rare Police model in 35, model 81 LA County #2 and model 81 Police Model from San Quentin Prison.
I hope you all enjoy the pictures and look forward to your comments.
Kindest Regards,
jack1653

Jack , your latest acquisitions are amazing, such a variety of model 8s all I can say is wow. Of course I would like to see the FN in a few more pictures or maybe the D grade, the C maybe....oh oh overload
Re: Tulsa Trip--Jackitis Bad
Great to see you at Tulsa, Jack.
You must have gone through that place like vacuum cleaner! That's quite a haul.
I saw a couple of .25's, a couple more than usual. Also snarfed up some Hornady .321
flat points for the 32, which are really hard to find.

Hey Guys,
Just about the time you think you have enough another opportunity presents itself and this was the case in Tulsa. There is a story behind each purchase and my reasoning, or justification for "jackitis". I will try and be brief but many of you know that isn't possible so I will bust the postings into one for each rifle.
The opportunity to get the Police Models is always a challenge. Getting LA County # 2 would give me consecutive police models from the same police agency. I purchased LA County #1 several years ago. 81police and I have had many discussions on the LA police models. His data base has a lot of information and this purchase was added to his base. What I found about this rifle is the serial number for LA #2 is lower than the LA #1. All this tells me that the department had purchased the rifles at different times and not in a particular sequence. I still do not know how the department determined when they would send the rifles to have the extended magazine conversions. Unlike some of the police models I have purchased, this rifle and magazine were serial numbered the same.
The last picture that is posted shows the two rifles. LA #1 has the number "63" on the stock. We do not know the purpose of the number 63.

jack1653

Hey 81police,
Can you post the picture of the charge handle and shim. Also the engraved model 8 with the long forearm. There were some more pictures of the D grade also. The picture of the 2 model 8 police models would be nice also.
Thanks Buddy,
jack1653

Jack, Enjoying all the photos and the story behind them. While you were adding to the collection did you find a progressive Dillon press to feed them?
You will need even more ammo now.

Hey Joe,
I did not get the Dillon progressive press at the show. I am conflicted about all the options, bells and whistles that are required to get this thing to work. The model I was considering is the Super 1050 powered by the Rev 7. That sucker will really pump the ammo out. I am going to continue studying the options. It appears to me that the less manual intervention is better because it eliminates the potential for mistakes. It is expensive but I think it would be a good investment. I will keep you informed of my progress.

Jack

Re: Tulsa Trip--Jackitis Bad
Hey Guys,
You never know what you may find in these rifles. Take a look at this. When I removed the charge handle, a brass shim came out with the bolt handle. I have never seen one before. The purpose was obvious after I tried the charge without the shim. It was very loose in the bolt. Kind of a neat idea. I am going to try this on some other rifles that have "sloppy" charge handles in the bolt. This shim was in the model 8 C Grade with round knob.
As you can see, this old rifle had not been cleaned in a long time. I tore it completely down and it cleaned up very well. You don't see the C Grades very often and even more rare in the round knob. This rifle was in 32 caliber.

Hey Ranman,
Here are some more pictures of the FN. I tried to get some close ups and hope they are okayThis FN has the plain barrel like the model 8. There were not that many plain barrels made and to find one is very lucky. This is the second plain barrel in my FN's.

I'd like to congratulate Jack1653 on his great luck at Tulsa. It's nice to see that one of my friends was able to score on such a large level!! My son's and I had planned to attend the Tulsa show, but work schedules wouldn't allow it this spring. We reluctantly cancelled our room reservation and watched from afar . Jack kept me informed about his fun trip. Maybe we can get to Tulsa in November. We are already making plans to attend it then.
Thanks for your time, Roger

Congrats Jack!
Now that is my kind of shopping spree! Are any of those going to be shot or just safe queens?
And to curdog, you have trouble finding the Hornady .321" flat points? Midway USA and Grafs almost always have them in stock. I'm fortunate to have two shops near me that usually stock them and one of those places usually has the Speer flat point and the newer Hornady FTX as well. Guess I'm lucky!

Re: Tulsa Trip--Jackitis Bad
Hey Richard,
Here are some more pictures of the custom model 8. I was told it was made for one of the Remington executives. It is a partial engraving. I found the wood to be very unusual with the full length forearm that has the charteristic schnable end. The checkering is excellent and it takes real skill to accomplish checkering that is perfect when the lines are as long as these are. I will have to post the pictures in groups of 3.

Re: Tulsa Trip--Jackitis Bad
Hey Mike,
All my rifles can be shot and I don't mind firing most of them. There are a few that could be classified as "safe queens", but as 81police and Sarge756 will tell you, I don't mind if others want to shoot them. 81police thought I was crazy when I brought several of my Police Models to Texas for him to shoot. Funny thing was he wouldn't shoot his.
Please feel free to call me on one of your trips through the area and you can see them up close and personal. We can run to the farm to let you rip off a few rounds.
Regards,
Jack

Hey Guys,
Jump in with your opinions about this rifle. It has a removable magazine similar to the Krieger Conversions. There was a thread about another rifle that was very similar to this one several months back.
I have included some pictures of three magazines for comparison to aid in the discussion. There is a Krieger, the 6 shot extended magazine and a 5 shot POE magazine from one of my Connecticut State Police model 81. The magazine in question is serial numbered to the rifle. I don't know if the pictures reveal enough detail, but the extended magazine has all the same detail as the fixed magazine that are on the model 81's.

Hey Guys,
One of the three Police Models I purchased was a rare Model 8 with the 15-shot POE extended magazine. This rifle is a 35 caliber.
The picture show both of my Model 8 Police Models. Both are in excellent condition and have the early style forearm. You can read about these rifles in Henwood's book page 118. The rifles pictured here are in 30 and 35 calibers.

My absolute favorite of all 8's and 81's are the rare POE built Model 8's...and wow Jack those two pictured are BEAUTIES!
Such cool, and somewhat ahead of their time guns.
