My father owns a Model 81 from January 1948 and was wondering what the 18 means that is stamped on the trigger guard. I have attached a picture of this for clarification.

thanks

Hey I remember when this rifle was auctioned in 2011 on gunbroker, it stood out because it was an unusually marked "B" grade. Cool gun!

Numbers marked on the trigger plate are not anything out of the ordinary. There's a bunch of different ones actually but I don't know exactly what they mean...perhaps some sort of inspection stamp

Hey 81police,

You have a good memory. I bought that rifle. It is the only one I have seen with the "B" following the serial number. I believe this picture is the same rifle. If he will PM me I can confirm the serial number.

Yes this was a picture I found on the internet. My dad doesn't do the internet thing or smart phone thing and that was the only picture I could find with the 18 on it by the trigger guard. Were just trying to figure out what that means. Sorry for the use of that picture..but its all I could find as an example.

Hey Cebrowning1,

Not a problem using the picture. I am glad that it was available for you to use to help us understand what you were describing. I agree with 81police in saying that it is an inspection mark. We have never figured the reason for Remington's inconsistencies in the use of proof marks. Thanks for sharing your question.
