Joe, Nice looking 740. I have a first year 742 in 280 Remington bought in 1960. It made 10 hunts in Colorado. Finally, with all the rounds through it ,the common problem of sticking brass got too much for a chamber polish to take care of. It is still with me and I have all the pieces assembled to convert it to a pump action like a 760. Bit of interesting history on the 740/742 can be found here: http://remingtonsociety.com/rsa/journals/Model_74N
When our beloved Woodsmaster 81`s ceased production in 1950 Remington was without an autoloading center fire rifle for 5 years .Guess after the supplies of 81`s was sold it was a dry spell for a few years waiting for Remington to sort out and solve the problems with their new gun.
I have read and heard the stories around camp about the inaccuracy issues with the 740/742`s. Can`t join that crowd cause the two I have (the 280 and a later model in 30-06) are very accurate. I wouldn`t waste my time converting the 280 to a pump if it wasn`t.
