Model 8 30-30 Remington

Post by Docneeley »

Hi all. First post here. I acquired a Model 8 made in 1907 and the caliber is marked as 30-30 Remington. At what point did Remington begin to mark the rifles as 30 Remington? Just curious. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum! You have an early gun with an uncommon caliber designation stamped on it.

1907 there was hand engraved caliber designation on the earliest of guns. After that they started stamping 30-30 Rem on the barrel extension. I can't say with full certainty but before 1907 was over they changed to 30 Rem.

Does your rifle have the early safety?

Sorry, but I’ve owned 30/30 marked rifles as late as early 20,000 serial numbers. However, who knows when those barrels and extensions were actually made. I’m sure that Cameron may know the correct answer to these questions.
Thanks for your time

I know of one in the 28000 range that I believe is 1912 production. Looks to be original and has a pistol grip

Thanks for the answers. The serial number is 2692 and I don't know the safety types, but I'm assuming it is early. Condition is amazing (to me). By the way, 30-30 Rem is engraved. One thing, it has a rear peep sight and a previous owner bent the buckhorn sight on the barrel back so it didn't interfere with the sight. I can't bend it back because close inspection shows it is cracked. Is there a place to find a period replacement?

Sounds like a wonderful rifle! The early safety is noticeably different, it has a teardrop like appearance. If you don't mind share a couple pictures.

There is an early Model 8 rear buckhorn sight on gunbroker still. The early buckhorns had the patent date stamped into them. I have no affiliation with this seller!

Stamping talk-
I'm all ears about the timeline on the 30-30 stamps and even the 25-35 stamps. As I said, I wasn't certain. Another topic for the Q&A sub-forum. I'm sure a couple other veteran members could give a pretty solid timeline for that. I've heard a few say that there aren't guarantees with some of these gun's variation.
