Stith mounted 81

Post by Hibby83 »

I received my new to me 300 Savage Model 81 this week. Unfortunately the old Weaver K2.5 is too foggy for service. I may send it out for repair, or find a nice & clear replacement for it.

I figured after giving it a solid once over, I'd shoot it. I then decided that I may as well get one of each of the calibers out and do some chronograph testing.

I've never had this many out in one day. Needless to say, I had a great time!

Here's the rough average results. I'll have to adjust the loads a little for a couple of the calibers and dip into reloading the 300 Savage soon. All reloads were using round nosed bullets.

Reloads
25 Rem 117's high 1900 fps
30 Rem 150's high 2200 fps
32 Rem 170's low 1900 fps
35 Rem 200's low 1900 fps

Factory Core Lokt's
35 Rem 200's low 2000 fps
300 Savage 150 's low 2500 fps

Luke
Very pretty, but I see no lyman sights. Did You leave out on purpose or is it gone? I do like the Stith mount for it's takedown compatibility but I don't like all the xtra holes. I have NIB mount but have yet to find a rifle already with a drilled receiver. A shame Remington did not think to drill for optics

Thanks for the compliment's gentlemen.

Phyrbird, the Stith equipped rifle didn't come with a Lyman peep, it has a filler screw where I can only assume a Redfield peep would've been. The 35 Rem pictured above does have a Lyman. I do like the Stith mounts too! I was pleasantly surprised that a South Paw like me could comfortably shoulder a scoped spring-pole. I thought it would feel too awkward/unnatural. I purchased this rifle so my father could enjoy shooting one accurately on our range trips. 74 year old eyes and standard open sights don't go together.

A replacement K2.5 should arrive early next week. I'm still playing e-mail and phone tag with names I gathered from forums regarding scope repair to fix up the one that was on the rifle.

Luke,

That is some nice wood on that 32!

A company that I used for scope repair was called Ironsight, Inc. They did a great job.

Thanks Dan. The figure of the buttstock is part of the reason why I bought it. I also I didn't have a 32 Rem 81. The buttstock is numbered to the gun.

I've read good reviews of Iron Sight's work, I've heard the timeline is pretty lengthy for return. That's why I'm checking into the smaller repair shops

Luke,

Yes, it took a year to get the scope back, but they did a really nice job.

Let us know where you end up going with the scope, how well they did, and how long it took. That would be good information to have.

I was referring to our Other 30Rem rifle. The sister to the one I have.
Still there?

The new to me K2.5 arrived over the weekend and was installed in short order. The glass is clear and the tube is clean & free from ring marks.

I mounted it 90 degrees counter clockwise of the traditional way so I could use the open sights. First shot on paper at 30 yards was 1" low and 7 inches right. Made my adjustments and got it centered up, now I'm ready for 50-100 yards. Gotta get to the bench and load some up.

Yo Luke
300S will give good results out to 300 if you can hold it, I probably can't anymore. It's a mini 308.
