Kreiger Conversion

Post by 54bullseye »

Got lucky and spied this on a gun auction site back about a month ago at a very reasonable price. The little aluminum piece on the bottom of the magazine made me wonder at first but everything else looked correct so I went ahead and bought it anyway. I think the owner probably attached that piece so not to accidentally release and possibly lose the magazine while hunting.

It has the extra screw on the left side of the receiver. The latch works perfectly and magazine clips in nice and secure ! The magazine with the aluminum piece on it came with the gun the other I found on eBay about the same time.  I had to pay up on that magazine but I have under $1400 into a decent 1940 model 81 in 30 rem with Kreiger conversion with two magazines!!  I was very happy to say the least !!

The eBay mag was sold as 35 rem but I just bent the two springs in ever so slightly and it holds and feeds the 30 rem ammo just fine. The eBay mag fits like a glove as well.  I will post a bunch of pictures so I hope you enjoy them.  The wood on the gun is a little rough but all and all a great package !
Thanks John Taylor

Those are nice photos of a very nice, interesting rifle. Thanks for sharing them, John.

I wonder if that aluminum piece is a repair of some type? I have never seen one like it.

Well Dan you got my curiosity up !!! Nothing going on under the aluminum piece that I can see. I think he just did it to keep his hand from accidently opening latch and having magazine fall out. I can see where you could hit it while carrying it all day especially with gloves on.

Thanks for bringing it up. John Taylor

John,

I think you are correct about the aluminum plate. I wonder if the owner did it himself, or asked Kreiger & Sons to do it as part of the modification.

Thanks for the excellent pictures and great catch on this one, the wood looks fine to me - just honest wear.
Nice rifle!
