Hi from a new old guy

Post by GrampyTom »

Hello from GrampyTom. I just got my first Model 81. I'm a lucky guy because it is an 81D. It's no safe queen and looks like it has spent a good deal of time in the field since it's birth in 1948 ( it is almost as old as me!) the next serial number after this one was taken off the line to be made into an 81F. I've been a Remington lover all my shooting life and although I am a 99% military gun guy, I always had a soft spot forRemington civilian rifles. My first firearn was a Remington 512 which I still have. Yup, I am one of those guys who just can't get rid of stuff. It pains me to see how The Remington name has been diminished by models such as the 770. Any this is my first post and I will put up a couple of pics of my new, ornate-but-bad-ass 81D in 35Rem.

This is awesome! A stunning 81!!!! We operate a confidential database on engraved 81's... especially D grades. If you're willing, we would love to add yours. If so, would you email me?

I got it out west. I never pass a gunstore by when traveling and have been surprised at the things I find. I don't know if certain things are more popular in certain states than others or not. You wouldn't think so now that the internet has made distance and regional differences moot. This thing hypnotized me and said "buy me.......now!" So,I did. I have never spent so much on a firearm before, or even a used car, but I had to get it. Being a military gun guy, I don't like minty, perfect, unused as much as items that have successfully fullfilled their intended function and bear the evidence of doing so. This 81 has been carried in the field and hunted but not abused. I am a big fan of Browning machine guns, especially Ma Deuce, and the 8/81 having a real family resemblance was a big factor in me wanting this. In my research, I found that the next serial number was also removed from the line and was made into an 81F. What a pair that would make! I'd need to mortgage the farm to own the pair. Thanks for the kind comments and I am looking forward to learning bunches about my new buddy on this BB.

Hey GrampyTom,

Welcome to the forum! You sure know how to make a grand entrance with the model 81 D. There aren’t many of these rifles and to find one just waiting to be bought is very unusal. I am glad to see you give it a good home. We will be waiting to see more pictures of this beauty.

Regards,

Thanks, Jack. I got lucky like that a few times but I try to keep my eyes open and learned along time ago that if you like something, buy it when you see it because it won't be there when you come back for it. From what I've seen so far, you have quite a stable full. I am still looking around the BB and I really hit a gold mine of info. I got lucky.......again.
