Really Odd Buttplate

Post by errickbraggs »

My dad gave me a Remington Model 8 that belonged to his friend Cecil. I've asked Cecil a couple times about the missing buttplate but he said the plate was gone before he got the gun. I've looked for this at gun shows (and online) for a couple years now with no luck. It is strange because the stock curves inward on both the top and the bottom. I've found pictures online of the correct buttplate; it appears to be metal (of some kind), with two screws, and a UMC stamp. Of course the good folk I've found at the gun shows say this is the most rare buttstock for the Model 8, some have never seen it before.

First off, is there a name for this type of plate? What do I ask people for?
Was this buttplate used on other guns? Could I be looking for other Remington models that would be easier to find one of these?
If you have one for sale (or know someone who does), please contact me.

Finally, thanks in advance for any help given. I appreciate it.

Eric,
Got one on rifle, not available. You are right I've seen 2 on auction, unrealistic prices. Wish we knew the origin of these, I know I saw pictures elsewhere :?: :?: :?:
I beleive a couple of our members have these, doubt any are spares....

John Henwood called these "semi-military" "rifle" style steel buttplates. They are quite rare indeed.

Henwood also notes, "the stock was apparently intended for a hard-rubber plate and was factory-modified to take this one, since the original screw holes were plugged and new ones drilled. All known examples were made in this manner" (p.48).

Thanks Phyrbird and 81police for the replies.

Phyrbird, where did you see them for auction; eBay? What do you remember the prices being? You wouldn't take the one you have off and rent it to me so I can have a gunsmith make me one, would you? I'd also pay insured and trackable shipping both coming to me and going back to you...

81police, that would explain a couple of the filled holes on the back (see link below). Thanks for the interesting note!
