forearm screw and bushing Model 8 (8-32)

Post by John B »

I am new to this forum so please pardon any errors I make in use. I recently bought a Mod 8 in 35 Rem and the forestock was broken and the screw & bushing were missing. I can make the stock or find a semi-inletted one, but I cannot find the abovementioned hardware ... any help finding a forearm swivel screw and bushing for a Model 8 would be most appreciated. Thank you all for your time and consideration!!

Numrich still has a few parts, not those you are looking for. Most of us have to wait for them to show up on GBroker or FleaBay. Not much help I know but it's what we got....

The Model 8 forearm Screw threads seem to be 8-32.
You will have to scrounge eBay and GunBroker to find the right part. I bought a Model 8 .30 Remington with replacement wood and the forearm was held on with clear shipping tape, but I had found a Model 8 Takedown Screw on eBay so I'm okay, but the forearm is a bit fuller then the original so my screw on grabs a few threads. I'm going to make one. My forearm has no escutheon either.

The Model 81 takedown screw has larger threads.

I just wanted to say that my M81 fore-arm screw is not an #8-32. My ~1945 M81 screw is a #12-28. Friggin' oddball.

The one I measured for a Mod.81 is 12-32tpi....I would think that this may indicate that Remington may have contracted the battle shroud out to multiple shops?
Thank you for the help.

It's possible that someone altered a 60+ year old rifle to be something other than factory too. I have been frustrated in the past that the industry that established interchangeable parts has so many oddball and otherwise non-stardard fasteners/hardware.

In fact I've gone out of my way to make some oddball 33TPI hardware for some of my custom stuff. I should have taken it a few steps farther and made it 8.3 TPI, 3-start, left-hand, whitworth just to aggravate some poor sod after I'm dead.

12-28 isn't really oddball. The two standard tpi for a #12 thread is 24 & 28.

I know the 81 takedown screw is a larger thread then Model 8, I just haven't measured or gauged the threads on our 81.

Back then 40 tpi was common for # 6 & 8 screws now everything is either36 or 48.

Henwood in his book on these rifles does mention a couple of screw sizes and threads that are truly oddball.

Well as long as they keep it between 2.5TPI and 72TPI (and some metric options) I can accommodate them, regardless of their insanity.

As an anecdote, I worked in an aerospace prototype machine shop for 7 years and have handled parts that are currently on Mars. I worked with things between 00-90s and 2.5"-4 pitches. Not once did I see a 6-48 or 12-28 pitch that whole time. Only when I started monkeying with guns did those 'standard' fasteners appear.
