25 Remington reloading questions

Post by Gamemaster06 »

Can someone give me some baseline info on how to reload for 25 Remington? What is the trim to length of the brass? Overall case length? What kind of primer? Crimp or no crimp? Powder and how much? I'm going to be using 117 grain Hornadys. I'd like to use IMR 3031. The gun it's for is a Model 8. THanks in advance.

Gamemaster, My Lyman manual #43 copyright 1964 shows 3031 with 117 gr. jacketed 21 gr. start load at 1930 fps and max 26 gr. at 2339 fps. Also lists 4064 23 gr. start and 27 gr. max and 4320 23 gr. start and 27 gr. max. Case length 2.050. I assume that is max length since no trim length is listed. Cartridge oal at 2.53. I'd start at the low end and go up a grain at a time till you find a load that reliably cycles the action. My experience with 30 and 35 calibers in the Model 8 suggests you don't need max loads to cycle the action. I have also found ambient temperature will affect reliability. Loads that worked the action of my 35 caliber at 80 degrees F were sluggish at 40 degrees. The old Lyman manual does not list any pressure data. All of my older Lyman manuals list the 25 Remington and 25-35 Winchester together. Same for the 30 Remington and 30-30 Winchester. If you can find modern pressure tested data for the 25-35 Winchester it should be safe to use that data for the 25 Remington. I have not shot my Model 8 25 much but have shot my Model 14 25 caliber more. PM me if you want my data for that rifle.

I have found that when using 3031 in .25 Rem that the starting charge, 21 grains, does not work the action at all. at 24 grains the action begins to work, but not always, and I get several stovepipe ejection malfunctions. 26 grains makes the action work with zest! I use 25 grains now to not over stress the brass.

Even the latest Hornady reloading manual, #10, under data for the 25/35 Winchester says that the data may be used for the 25 Rem. That'll include data for the latest modern powders like Lever. I've never loaded the 25, but have loaded for the 30,32 and 35's. I swore by IMR 3031 until I tried Lever.

Again Ken Waters Pet Loads has very impressive articles for these rounds. Multiple projectiles, powders, cases, and details of most accurate loads for our Ladies.

My 25 rem brass and bullets came in the mail today from Grafs. I wanted to use the 117 gn. Hornady SPs but they were out of stock so I order 117 gn. Sierra Gamekings. Will a spitzer boattail bullet function okay in my Model 8? And what size primer do I need? Lr?

I use Winchester large rifle primers for all of my rifle reloads. I have never found any difference between brands. For the 25 Remington you should not need magnum primers.

SPBT should work fine if the length does not mess w/ feeding in the mag. There could be issues with the bullet seating depth in the case. the boattail creates a deeper seating. It ought to be one flat shooting rascal. If this works you could try some of the 90-100g boattails that could shoot even flatter with better terminal ballistics. Avoid too light bullets to avoid action function failures.
I'm pretty sure the 25R takes a Large rifle primer, STD not magnum.

Well I tested my first load for the 25 Remington today and it went well. Cycled perfectly and shot a one inch group at 50 yards with open sights. I'm definitely satisfied. My load was 24.5 grains of IMR 3031 with a 117 grain Sierra Gameking SPBT and a Winchester LR primer. Overall cartridge length of 2.550" to fit the magazine. Trim to length 2.040".

Good shooting Gamemaster. I just got my own model 8 to the range this past week. Hornady SST 117gr and Speer TNT HP 87gr projectiles over IMR 3031. Impressed with the accuracy and had no problems grouping well at the 100M target.

Hornady publishes 25-35 Winchester data and states that is okay for the .25 Remington.
The Winchester load data for the 25-35 Win. is 117 grain SP; 28.5: 760

A couple other resources I have used: :geek:

http://stevespages.com/page8a.htm

https://www.loaddata.com/Cartridge/25-R ... -Data/2470

Be alert :ugeek: some of these list for pointed bullets that are not useful in the pump guns...
