Newby model 8 in .300 savage questions

Post by Navychief »

Hello
Just bought this one at a local gun show. The rifle is dated 1928 based on serial number which match. It has a cww3 on barrel and the barrel is marked .300 sav which the codes says it was sent back to Remington in 1950 so was this a factory converted .300 savage?

The wood is from another Remington and the front sight has been changed I am going to talk with my gunsmith to see if he can fill in the scope holes on side of receiver or should I just sell the gun and move on to a better example?

Thanks Matt

There are quite a few holes and the will always be visible. If you want just a shooter keep it provided it does shoot well. If you want a gun that is going to go up in value and be desired by collectors move on. You might get more for it by selling the parts. The receiver is not worth much because of the holes.

So do you think it is a factory converted model 8 .300 savage?

I'm not sure the factory got into swapping caliber. I would guess someone, somewhere along the line swapped it to 300 savage. Hopefully the correct buffer springs were used.

The "3" repair code neither confirms or denies this being a factory conversion, however with the modified front sight and forearm, there seems to be some non-factory customization going on with your rifle. My guess would be no, it's not a factory job.

Echoing Mikeshoe72 comments, hopefully the correct recoil spring was used.

I think if the original rifle was a .35, the swap to .300 would need a barrel only.
As far as I can tell, the recoil and buffer springs are the same.
