Building (rebuilding?) one of our ladies
So, I started seeing model 8 parts for sale in Fleabay, mostly from 2 different sellers, and decided to buy some. Then a frame goes up for sale on GB. Gotta have that. Pretty soon I have most of the parts for a rifle and start searching for the rest. (I did find a tang screw, so that's a relief) Anyway, this is what I have so far.

It's .30 Rem. Got a stock and the tang screw coming in next week. Oddly, it doesn't have a barrel jacket plug screw for a sling swivel.
The barrel is in very good shape so I hope she's a shooter.

So, my question for the learned folk here is this: should I refinish this one and have a scope mounted? I have a nice Lyman mount and since the receiver already has holes in it, no harm done, yes?

A scoped 8 would be a great option. Vintage or period correct scope always have the cool factor. Besides you always needs options

Karl,
Dude I'm proud of you, restoring instead of parting out to the four winds. Admirable
For the record I'm still looking for a reliable smith and refinisher here in southern Ky, I thought I had one in Auburn Ky. After he kept 2 rifles for 3 years, charged $175 for work not finished, & added more pitting to parts in good shape to start with I ended up getting one cerrakoted (OK) and the other to (expensive) Gander.
My most reliable shop now is the Russellville tech center machine shop. A shame there are few local smiths, right?

My smith is in Montgomery, so not too far away.

This stock doesn't bloody fit.

Karl check the depth of the hole for the recoil spring tube. I've had 3 early M81s that were not drilled deep enough and caused problems with the trigger guard screw. Sometimes the inlet for the trigger guard in the stock is not deep enough too...

The hole for the trigger guard screw isn't even close. It's too far up the tang. I wonder if it's for a similar gun, if that's at all possible. It does fit very tight, so I'm going to test fire it this week anyway.
