30-30 to .32 Remington order of operations?

Post by jim18611865 »

Here is what I plan on doing.
I am going to make a brass piece to hold the shells.

Step 1 Full length re-size/deprime cleaned 30-30 cases to .32 Remington.
Step 2 Chuck them up in lathe and make appropriate cuts.
Step 3 Clean/tumble again.
Step 4 Anneal the necks
Step 5 Load them
Step 5 Shoot.

Is there anything I should add or change?

Thanks

That should work fine. I would recommend checking case length some time after sizing. Also, annealing can be done at any point prior to loading but with old brass consider annealing first to reduce splitting when expanding the neck.

Different bore size, same issue. You might check this thread.

First thing I did was make a shell holder.
Basically a .320 brass rod.
It fits fairly snug in a re-sized 30-30 case.

Then I re-sized 5 cases and chucked them up in the lathe.
They wobble quite a bit. Is it just going to be trial and error in getting them in the chuck centered, or something different?

Any suggestions?

Also, I will need to make a cutter for the extractor groove. What type of grinding wheel do I need?

Thanks again.

An ordinary bench grinder with a fine wheel will grind the tool to shape. Just use a rimless case for a pattern.

Put a slip fit plug in the case mouth to support it, and grab the case in the 3 jaw (not too tight). Support the rim end with a live center in the tailstock to keep the case running true. Turn the rim off, and then plunge your specially ground tool in to the correct depth to form the new extractor groove. I have a little piece of steel with a notch in it to eyeball the rim thickness setting.

Hope this helps.

Curdog,

Define "fine" ?
100 Grit?

Anyone have pictures of the tool you use to cut the extractor groove?

Thanks

I chucked a .32 Special size die in the lathe and push fit the case into it with my thumb. That way the brass runs true for cutting the rim. When the cut is finished just slip a shellholder over the rim to remove the brass from the die. Sometimes a little help is required by inserting a screwdriver between the bottom of the die and the shellholder for extra leverage.
Grinding a HSS tool blank to the correct profile is difficult and unnecessary. It is much easier to use a piece of square tool steel and mill your angles in and that way you have nice sharp corners. There is no reason that you could not use a file if no mill is available. I used O-1 square stock. Heat with a torch and quench in oil to harden. You can cut rims on 100 brass in 1 hour easily.

I just use the fine wheel on the bench grinder, I've got no idea what the grit is. All you have is a little flat on the end, and an angle to match the extractor groove. Just use a case for a pattern, when it fits in the groove, grind a little relief, and you're good to go. It shouldn't take but 3 or 4 minutes to make.

I did a box of cases this afternoon, just took a few minutes. I took some pictures for you, but I have no idea how to load them onto a post. I can make just about anything, but I can't run a computer to save myself (not that I really want to).

PM me your email, I know how to send them that way.

This site is awesome.
Pics are from curdog.
This is the kind of info an inexperienced one like myself needs.

I did make a similar holder.

The little plate with the step is my gauge to cut the new rim/extractor groove. Just hold it across the end of the case, and touch the tool to it to set the rim thickness.

The piece of tool steel costs about $3.

Now I have a question for you - how do I attach pictures to a post?

You have to Choose File (likely it needs to be re-sized).
I use Microsoft Office Picture Manager. I re-size to Web Large.
Then click Add the file.

Thanks Jim

Now I see it - I didn't go any further than the first "Submit" bar. I'll give it a shot when my wife gets home. She can hold my hand, she's a lot better at this than I am.

BTW Midsouth Shooters has new Redding 32 Rem dies in stock. They work great, in fact the cases in the pictures were loaded in them, and they function fine.
