Different stock cheeks on my in-the-mail 1906 model 8

Post by smitsauce »

Hey,

Have a look at the cheeks on my new first year production 1906 Model 8 in .35 Rem. Serial 1311. I have never seen them like this before. They are always semi-circular on all the photos I've seen. Any ideas?

Also, are these King sights a good or bad addition?

Cheers,

Ian

i have never saw cheeks like those. i don't think the king sight hurts, if anything it helps, they are correct for the time period of the gun and you can always find a standard model 8 sight. that looks like a nice first year gun.

Sir, Amazing as it may seem, I just saw those exact cheeks on a deluxe rem. M-11 -12 guage shotgun. It was at a guns how table here in iowa at one of our major shows, yesterday. I remember it quite vividly, because I purchased too much stuff friday nite at the show, and then couldn't afford to buy this unusual shotgun. It had 2 or 3 x wood, nicely checkered, straight grip, with those odd cheeks. It also had the whelen-fluted comb and a rem/umc hard rubber buttplate with the little widow's peak on top.very similar to the one's on some special order winchester rifles and shotguns. It also had a solid rib 28" full choke barrel. I'm just hoping the guy still has it at the next show in January
,and I can afford it.I don't know enuf about m-11 s to know if it just had special order wood or if it was a trap grade gun of some sort. But it most definitely had those same cheeks.
Thanks for your time,
Roger

Nice 8, there is a rear sight on eBay minus screws and elevator with a patent date of 1902. This is probably the one you need but someone else with more experience would know better. http://m.ebay.com/itm/400617038116?nav=SEARCH&sbk=1
BTW what is the highest month/year of the patent line on the barrel jacket.

Thanks

I don't have a picture of the barrel jacket markings yet. It is in the mail so I will have to wait and see when she shows up. I think I have a spare rear sight for her if I want to change the King one out.

The best bet to confirm authenticity, is to pull the stock and check for a matching serial number stamped inside. I have also seen these cheeks on M11's.

Hey Cam,
Do you know if those cheeks are on model 11 trap grade type guns or just a random deal? I'd really like to find out a little about these cheeks and also the checkering pattern on special order m-11 s.
Thanks for your time,

Roger,

Sorry I was mistaken, a gun with nearly identical cheeks can be found in "Browning: Sporting Arms of Distinction 1903-1992" Book by Matt Eastman. The gun I'm thinking of is a first year production Browning A5, the cheeks, if my mind recalls correctly, were nearly identical. I'll try to get a scan of that page here soon.

Ok, I got her all cleaned up. There are no serial numbers or markings on either of the wood stocks. The barrel jacket seems to have been reblued a long time ago and retains more blueing than the receiver, but not by too much and it still looks really nice. The bore is gorgeous and not used much at all. Very happy with this one!

Cheers,

Ian

Check out the cheeks on this round knob model 11 shotgun. I think Sighthound informed us that the butt stocks of these old model 11's were interchangeable with the model 8 round knobs. The cheeks are not as long as the model 8 example here, but they are pointed and not rounded.
