Nice, let's see a pic of the box end.
Re: Tatooed Lady in a Full Monty
Rem81auto,
Sorry, I'll get one soon but there only the markings on the bottom. I believe this is a return box used for a repair. Hey, it's Remington though and there's a period Marble's cleaning rod in the box. Pity, only 6 rounds of ammo. Gee I need some reloadable 25Rem and 32Rem brass.
If there was a sticker on the end it's gone.

Outstanding!

Re: Tatooed Lady in a Full Monty
Guys,
In the first picture there is something that looks like a "cookie" on the inside of the lid. You can just make it out just below the bolt handle. Anyone wanna guess what it is? If you get it right I'll post a clearer photo.

So, if not a gingerbread house cookie... I'm guessing a piece of the old styrofoam - to rest against the bolt handle.

Re: Tatooed Lady in a Full Monty
Would what appears to be a quick detachable sling swivel stud on the bottom of the buttstock have been original?
Re: Tatooed Lady in a Full Monty
Come on Gents keep guessing: I give a hint; what would the factory put in a Gr D box to help the rifle?
Side note: I'm a Chocolate chip freak
Side note 2: Yeah the sling swivel hole looks large for Uncle Mikes or other current sling hardware. From the look it's not been changed.

What butt plate does it have? It doesn't look like anything Henwood showed us.

Re: Tatooed Lady in a Full Monty
Hey ROBOPUMP, The butt plate is a "Semi-Military" style (pg. 48 of Henwood's book), which is quite rare for the Model 8 and a very nice factory option. The rear sling swivel eyelet is commonly found on the Remington "Special Police" Model 81's and it is suited for the Hook Style sling swivels (Like the Vintage Winchester Sling Hooks). The eyelets are often found on other vintage firearms as well.
Since this rifle has a "Model 81" barrel jacket (with the second style Model 81 barrel inscription) and the treaded barrel jacket stud location, Phirbird could easily add a barrel jacket eyelet, a set of "Hook Style" sling swivels, a vintage leather sling and this rifle would be a great hunting companion! The Model 81 barrel jacket, with the deeper factory barrel engraving, would explain the ( X TT ) December 1948 repair code and the return shipping box.
It's a good looking rifle & one that we would all enjoy using afield. Congrats Phirbird!

you certainly don't come across those buttplates often, very cool! Great story about the repair code and replaced barrel jacket. The gun's got some neat history

Re: Tatooed Lady in a Full Monty
Jeff,
You're probably right, the barrel jacket head has the last 3 digits of the ser# on the right side. It's just possible the jacket got loose in the head and was repaired. I did find the box in Henwood's from Mr Creamer's collection. It looks like the label was of brown paper inked with the Remington logo of the period. They might have been out of the Model 8 jackets by the time this repair was completed. Rem8&81: If you could be so kind could I get clear photos of the printing on the paper box jacket for this box? I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks so much

Re: Tatooed Lady in a Full Monty
Hello Carl, Like you said sir, Remington was probably long out of the Model 8 barrel jackets by 1948. The Semi-Military butt plate and the Lyman 41R receiver sight are two very nice options. It's a great looking rifle and one that you will enjoy for many years to come! The 32 Remington caliber is also a very nice Whitetail cartridge. Enjoy Life, S and S HUNTCLUB
Follow-up: Tatooed Lady in a Full Monty
Just to follow-up, close magnification of the jacket reveals the funky mark after the '48 barrel code is the bottom of a mis-stamped 3. Which would be a repair code. The jacket also has the small screw hole for the fore-arm, a model 8 only feature. It become apparent for some reason this barrel jacket had to be replaced in '48 at the factory for some reason with the only ones available a Model 81. Sure wish there were some way to get some history from the factory...
I've tried to photo the "3" but my camera skills are not that good...
.
Side note: The "cookie" is a foam stick-on rust preventative. No way of knowing if it's factory...

Re: Tatooed Lady in a Full Monty
This is the same butt plate that is on my Grandfather's 1911 Model 8 25 Rem, that was rebarrelled for 30 Rem, but the rifle receiver still says 25 Rem.Phyrbird wrote:Robo,
