Front sight specs, help me please...

Post by kumpe »

When i got my 1900 the front sight bead was either broken off or ground down. I have managed to rebuild it so that it is usable, but it's kind of difficult to use since it is essentially just a thin post at this point, no bead.
My plan is to rebuild it properly, to make it as close to the original as possible. The problem is I don't know exactly what the original front sight looks like. I managed to find a few photos of it, but I need more detailed ones.
If someone could take a couple of photos of their front sight from a few different angles I would be forever grateful. The exact width of the bead would also be nice to know. Can anyone please help me?

Is your gun the ribbed barrel or smooth?

Could a grand & mighty Canuck start another, please.
Canuck, the sight looks as if it could be measured from the bottom of the dovetail to top as well??

Restoration complete. I would say the end result is quite ok for an amateur gunsmith, better than before at least. :)
What I did was silver solder a steel pin on top of the sight base and then carefully ground it to fit and look as close to the original as possible. Here's a few photos if anyone is interested.

Here's before, missing the bead;

During, just before soldering;

Almost done;

Lightly reblued and back on the gun;

It's now a lot more like the original at least. Will be a lot easier to shoot with as well.
Fun fact: the piece of metal used to make the bead is actually a pin from an old Auto-5, made the same year as my 1900, so the gun still consists of 100% steel from the FN-factory. :)

Thanks again @canuck for your help!

Looks great!
Sorry I didn't get back to you guys with a height measurement, but it appears it wasn't needed in this case.
