Hey savagebrother,
You are in a bad spot. The tang screws are very hard to find. I have been looking for one for a few years now. I hit a lot of big gun shows and none of the vintage gun parts dealers I have consulted have them. It is a part that often gets cross treaded as it can be very hard to get good alignment when refitting the butt stock to the rifle. I have a pistol grip style stock on my M81 300 Savage and had the screw strip out and have been looking for a replacement ever since. I have been getting by using one on it form one of my other M81s when I what to shoot or hunt with it and returning the screw to its original rifle when not . I hope you have better luck than I have had. I think the only way to find one is keep looking for a parts gun or a screw set that someone is offering from a parted out rifle. Ebay is a good place to look. Parts do come up from time to time. Only bad thing with that is you may wind up paying for stuff you really don't need to get what you want.

There is a guy on EBay that makes screws for rare guns, just check EBay for Remington 81 and you'll see the screws he makes and sells, they range from $12.00 to $30.00.
I had luck with Numrich Arms/Gunparts Corp years ago when I was working on a Model 8 project but these days they don't have much for the Model 8 or 81.

Thanks guys, yes I saw that on mine it's been cross threaded at the top before. It still has good threads through most of the hole. I have been watching on eBay, and I have it on call from numrich
I may just find me a screw of the proper length and thread then machine the head to fit.

Give Joe at aperturesnmore.com a shout. It`s a given that there is a need for these screws among us that collect and shoot these models. May not be the demand of 94 Winchester parts and such but I am sure I`m not alone with a desire to add a couple spare ones to my parts bin just in case.

Hey Guys,
Good news! Wildgoose, we/you are not in a bad place any longer. Confirmed with Joe Hulet that he does indeed make the screws we need. I am ordering a couple of them in addition to the mounting screws for the peep sights as well.
Contact him for ordering information here: joe@aperturesnmore.com or sightguy67@gmail.com

Several years ago I worked with Joe and sent him the dimensions of all the tang screws for the model 8 and 81(there are three of them and the 81 is the longest) He made some and sent them to me to try them out in my rifles. They were perfect and don't know why he did not put them on the market. He did let me keep one, but return the others to him. He has the dimensions and can make them. This was about 5 or 6 years ago when he had small children. The children may be taking up more of his time now. He married into the gunsmithing business.

I am back.

I need someone to direct me to the slow motion video of shooting the autoloaded I thnk Cam had made.

Be safe and enjoy life.

Hey Rob,
I'm glad to see you back on the forum. I had hoped that someone was already making these screws/bolts,etc. I have a late production flat knob model 8, that needs to be taken apart to reposition the little flat spring that fits into a small recess in the receiver,it's name escapes me at this moment. The tang stock screw is wallowed out and I can't budge it with conventional means in order to save it. The grab-it drill bit has worked for me 100% of the time to remove stubborn or ruined stock bolts. However it ruins the screw head completely. Rob, can you tell me if the flat knob screw/bolt is the same length as one of the ones you sent Joe to reproduce?
Thanks for your time,
Roger

Hello Roger. Yes the dimensions that I sent to Joe Huelet were for all the model 8 and 81 tang screws. The tang screw for the model 8 semi-pistol grip stock is the same whether flat or round knob.

Hey Rob,
Thanks for the reply. Do you think he could be persuaded to make some more of these stock bolts/screws?
Thanks for your time,
Roger

Well after inspecting the threads in the boss for the stock screw I could see it had been cross threaded
So after using a ball gage to mike it I realized it had to be taken up to a 1/4" thread. Soooo I recut the threads to 1/4"-20 thread and then took a 1/4"-20 countersunk screw and slowly ground it to what I needed. I can see why it gets cross threaded, not a very good design especially for fine threads.
I had to put a 1/8"-3/32" pilot on the end of the screw to get it to start.
Well any way I'll be taking it to the range shortly. :)
