Reloading Question for the 81

Post by one_drake »

Hello everyone, i have been searching but not able to find the information for Max pressures for the 81. I just bought a 81 in .300 savage and want to do some deer hunting with it this year. I live in the communist state of California and hunt often in a lead free zone. I am looking to reload some Barnes tsx 130 grn with H4895, the recommendations i have got are from the hogden website. Was planning on working the load up from 39.5 but any suggestions would be appreciated. I understand the powder space is a main concern with copper bullets thats why i dropped to the 130grn in stead of the 150grn. Just trying to be extra careful and don't want have my starting load be too much.

Hodgdon H4895 39.5grns 2,324ft/s 43.0grns 2,698ft/s

130gr at that velocity sounds safe enough. Stay a grain below max as long as it works the action. Full power loads in the .300 /81 make theirselves known on your collar bone. My first post!

Hi all. Country boy empirical evidence on Remington81 strength: I had one thirty some odd years ago that someone had rechambered to . 308 Win. Being young and dumb I shot the snot out of it with nary a problem- till it was stolen! It's probably still working out there somewhere... My current 1949 81 .300 Sav will never see a hand load hotter than factory loads. Right now i'm enjoying 150gr Fpgc cast/imr4227 2000fps. It's a hoot- most brass land on the benchrest and I'm getting 1-1/4" groups @50 yds.

The standard load for many years was 2700 FPS to match the "06" which in 1920 was 2700 FPS.
So a good load of IMR 4064 to 2700 should be perfect. I shot hornady's superammo thru it and brass came out looking great-primers still had plenty of radius and firing pin mark was nice and round, no cratering, and the brass barely swelled. If it shoots as accurately as I think it will it will be my go to load.
