Finally got this sucker apart!! Rem 8 .25 Rem

Post by 9.3shooter »

Took much oil and a few days of off and on work but I got the barrel guts out of the jacket today, finally! Very end of the barrel threads were buggered some which would explain the difficulty, and when I got it off there was a fair amount of grit/metal shavings mixed in with all the oil I used.
First few threads are pretty sad but there is plenty of good thread there and I can start the nut on by hand so not concerned about that. Barrel had a fair amount of rust on it, as did the innards which I am happy to say appear to be what was expected and no wood plug!
There is two steel washers, then the buffer spring which is light and can be easily compressed by hand. Then the spring case, spring, washer and nut.
Inside, the jacket tube wasnt too bad looking, swabbing it out now, while the other parts are soaking in PB Blaster, the stuff I used in this disassembly process. It worked.
Considering it ran perfect with all this rust inside and on all parts, I probably could have just ignored it but it was nagging at me, I wanted to see what was inside the mystery room! Now I know and happy I did and happy to find what I found other than all the rust but thats easily taken care of.
Here is a few pics.

I'm glad you got it apart. These .25 Rem and .25-35 Rem guns are proving to be a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. However, I think that we have enough evidence to prove that the guns did at one time come with a wood buffer instead of a spring, even if Henwood and other authorities can't prove it from factory records. Why? We may and probably will never know.

Seems like the ones marked .25-35 are the ones with the wood plug. Do we have an idea of the SN range for the woodies? Mine is 1913 build. However I believe the jacket is a replacement as there are no numbers on it and only has the REP on the right side, but could have its original internal parts at that. We'll never know.

These really are an intriguing rifle.

Just for the sake of comparison, this is what the inside of my 25 cal barrel jacket looks like. As you can see, there are no washers and the buffer spring looks like it came out of one of the large caliber guns. This rifle was factory repaired and the jacket, and springs look much newer than the rest of the gun.

Interesting that yours has the heavy spring in it. I shot mine before I had it apart so had no idea what I might find. It ran fine with two different combos of components, so I guess its correct to this rifle at least.

My 25 Remington is marked 25-35 on the barrel and I've pulled the barrel apart and there is no wooden plug. I cleaned everything inside, wasn't that bad.
