Need Model 8 Firing Pin for 35REM

Post by BEVO08 »

I took the entire bolt apart tonight only to find that the tip of my firing pin was broke off inside the bolt head. It had to have been like that for years as the pin and the tip are completely rounded off and smooth.

2 Questions
Does anyone know where I can find a new bolt, and is it the same firing pin for all calibers?

I can’t get the pin out that holds the firing pin in place. It’s the small pin on the back of the bolt carrier. How do I get this pin out so I can remove the firing pin?

Sorry to hear about the pin. No, they're not all the same. I know that some have a spring and other, older versions do not. Whether or not that matters, or how it relates to different calibers, I don't know.

The firing pin retention pin in my M81 is half-round. It can only be removed out the way it was driven in.

Mine does not have the spring so I assume that’s the older version. There is a pin at the back of the bolt carrier that I cannot get out. I also have no idea where to find a new firing pin.

Photos from my phone won’t attach

The FP retention pin hole is about 45˚ off level through the bolt carrier. In mine I drove it out from the bottom right, out the top-left. It only goes one way. If you tap on it the wrong way then it will bind the firing pin.

If you tap on it, and the FP tightens up, then go to the other side.

My firing pin does not have the tapered section on the shaft. It’s skinny the whole length. Basically what yours looks like after the taper.

I might be able to make you one if you strike out finding a factory Remington one for sale. Let me know.

Thanks for all the help Fred I really appreciate it. Are they harder to make then to find on the internet LOL! If u can make one that will fit to spec I will probably take you up on that offer, just let me know how much. All I can find is a model 8 in 35REM with the bolt/bolt carrier complete, that would cost me $150 just to get the pin. I’m not sure if an 81 pin will work in a model 8 of so there are a few of those online?

I don't know where to look for one online. When you have tools, sometimes it's a better use of time to make new parts than to hunt down rare OE parts on the internet.

I'm not saying it's easy to make them. I'm saying that if the OE parts don't exist, then it might be worthwhile to bring an uncommon antique firearm back into working order.

If I had some M8 FP dimensions I can make one, if I get some suitable material. Right now, I only have my M81 FP that I could duplicate.

I’m taking it to a gunsmith today found a firing pin but it will need to be modified. I can do that myself but I also want the receiver polished on the inside, and the buttstock needs to be glass bedded to fit better.

I have a broken pin for my model 8 .32 cal. I just ordered a replacement one from Midway USA, Larry Potterfield. It is on its way.

Received my firing pin from Midway. The pin comes with this label on the package, "WARNING: this firing pin/striker
blank must be fitted by a competent gunsmith as most firing pins/strikers require minor fitting,"
