Waters stated that the Remington literature of the day claimed that these rifles, in .30 cal., would group 3 inches at 100 yards with the standard round nose ammo. He was wondering if that couldn't be bettered. His load of choice was a spitzer bullet over 32 grains of 3031. The trick, of course, is seating the bullet back far enough to fit in the itty bitty magazine.
Scratching the old chin, I gave it some thought. I have a couple of boxes of Hornady SST 150 grain pills designed for the .300 Savage, so the ogive is already short, and lots of 3031 and 100 virgin brass. To the loading bench!

As you can see, the bullets are seated as deep as I can get them without leaving the case mouth unsupported. The just barely fit, but they do.

I put a newer Redfield scope on, which hopefully won't have the wash out problem I experienced with the antique Bushnell on my .35 last season.

Early group, about 2 inches at 100 yards. Not bad, but not what we wanted, either.

Last group: 10 3-shot groups were fired at 100 yards.

It looks like Mr. Waters was definitely onto something. A real, live 1 3/4" group. Who knew the wonderful old rifles could do such a thing? Waters opined that this made it a 200 yard rifle, which is well within most places I hunt.

Might need to look up some pigs in the next week or two....

Just a note Mr Waters was instrumental in my (& brother too) ringing the gong at 185yds at the Great 8 Event. 180 gr Hornadys Spire points & 200gr Hornady Spire points. They are good in the 760 pump too. All our loaders should read & memorize his articles on the 25-30 & 35Rem loads because he made special effort for our Ladies.

I use the 147 grain 7.62/.308 bullet in the .300 Savage. I do not know in this combination will work with the .30 Remington. Okay I just did a comparison and the .300 S is a quite bit shorter then the .30 R or .25 R.
