Model 8 or 81 Police

Post by Joe Kent »

How common are either Model 8's or for that matter 81's POE rifles in .30 Remington ? Also does anyone have knowledge of any in .25 or .32? I have two 8's and two 81's but they all are in .35. Thanks and all my very best, Joe.

Great question Joe.

There are no factory figures to answer your question, but based on our websites research I can tell you this...

If you exclude the Connecticut State Police rifles (which were in 30Rem but had cut-down 5 round POE magazines), and also Police marked 81's with standard magazines and ONLY include rifles built with 15 round magazines...then out of the 95 remaining POE 8's and 81's we have on file, only 8 are chambered in 30Rem. That's 3 Model 8's and 5 Model 81's. Statistically that would mean 30Rem guns constitute for just over 8% of all POE guns.

The rarest of the rare would a Model 8 POE chambered in 30Rem, which by our data constitutes for about 3% of all POE rifles.

To my knowledge and in my research I've never seen an authentic POE in anything other than 35Rem or 30Rem. Forum member Jack1653 has built some custom conversion rifles using spare 15 round magazines. He has conversions in everything from 25Rem - 300Sav

Cam, thanks for the quick reply. I do not believe I have ever even seen a POE Rifle in .30. I, along with a batch of others, can only hope. Thanks again and all my very best, Joe.

I should have added that I have an FBI Model 81 in .30 but of course there are no police ownership markings on that rifle. To my limited knowledge they only ordered .30 caliber rifles.

Hey Joe,

Regarding Police gun calibers, I should have mentioned that all factory Police gun paperwork I've come across reads the same...

"Chambered for......30 Rem or 35 Rem Cal. only"

Cam, I understand the factory catalogs listing the Model 81 Police and we can be pretty sure Remington did not offer the rifles in anything but 30 or 35, but I wonder if anyone sent their own Model 8 in either 25 or 32 for conversion to St. Joe . No way we will ever know unless one shows up. All my best, Joe.

I believe POE built & sold many many more complete Police 8's than they ever did conversion work on someone's rifle. I'm sure they did some of this work in the early days, but I think it was marginal compared to the complete guns they sold. Factory POE records we have reflect this as new POE 8 sales are very heavily marketed. You'd be hard pressed to find factory records showing solicitation of services to convert an owners rifle.

Joe, I've never come across any document with that information.

Check out the link below for a list of known departments, corporations, and individuals who were issued POE rifles...
