Question about stock number

My Model 8 with a 214XX-date range (1909) in 35 Rem has a fancy stock with checkering on the grip and forend. When I removed the stock, I noticed a serial number of some kind, 40XXX, in the recessed area where the receiver tang fits into the stock. Should the gun serial number match the stock number? What is this number on the stock?

Looks like this is a pre-1911, which makes it a Auto Loader, not a Model 8.

I confirmed that its a factory stock, exactly like the checkering on the website and has the "cheeks."

Yes, the numbers should match. It looks like the upgraded wood was taken from another rifle and out on yours. Notice the metal on the tang is exposed on the side. If it was fit to the rifle, that wouldn't show.
