new to me checkered m-8A

Post by Roger »

Hey guys,
I just finished negotiations on a factory checkered rem m-8A. It will be coming from a friend of mine in Connecticut, who is just as serious as most of us on the forum, about Rem8/81s. I have purchased several rifles from him in the past. He's very trustworthy. He emailed me a bunch of pics and it is just what I've been looking for , for several years now. It's a first year production 30 rem. Straight grip with the correct hard rubber buttplate and correct wood cheeks on the stock. It is not engraved caliber on the barrel extension. It is also not 30/30 rem. marked on the barrel extension. Seems out of sequence but who knows. It looks legit for sure in the photos. In fact it is in great condition.
If I can figure out how to forward these photos to someone, maybe they can be posted for everyone to see it. I'm excited to get to see it when it arrives in Iowa. He said the bore is good too,so it may shoot well too.
Thanks for your time,
Roger

My heartfelt thanks must go out to Sarge for posting these for me. I've been searching for a checkered A or a C grade that I could afford to buy for several years. I've had several near misses. Even one last year with this same guy. I'm excited to get here and in my hands. It reminds me of the feeling I had a few years ago, when I finally was able to buy an FN 1900 rifle. That was a surreal experience when it arrived at my dealers place.
Thanks for your time,
Roger

Hey Roger,

A great looking rifle :D I knew that you have been on the hunt for one for several years. Persistence in searching is an absolute must if any of us want to get what we want. I will be looking forward to seeing it in person when you come to Great 8 Event next year.

Regards,

Wow Congrats!! I do think factory checkered "A" grades may actually be more rare than "C" grade rifles. You just don't see the real McCoy factory checking on many "A" grades. Yours is a very nice example too. Collectible!

Hey fellas,
I picked up my new checkered m-8 today from my ffl dealer. It looks just like the photos that were sent to me,and were posted here by sarge. The wood appears to have been gone over with some sort of varnish or oil type finish. But the checkering looks very good. The caliber stamping has been sanded off mostly and restamped 30 rem. But there are still remnants of the old stamping under it. I believe it was 30/30 rem. marked. This may have been altered after some sort of trouble with 30/30 wcf ammo was encountered. After 110 years, who knows. I don't care and it measures as a 30 caliber bore so it should be OK. The bore is good for a rifle of this age . I can't wait to get it to the range this weekend. The wood is serial numbered to the gun too,as I removed both pieces to check it out. I think for the price I paid, it was a bargain. More after some range time.
Thanks for your /time,
Roger
