Old Sight

Post by jack1653 »

Hey Guys,

For some of you old-timers. This sight is on one of my model 8's from 1909. I have never seen another front sight like this one. It does not have a manufacturer or any identifying name on it. Do you have any suggestions?

Regards,

Jack,
Going through Stroebel`s " Old Gunsights " page by page I think I found it. I should have started with Remington Model 8 and the list of optional front sights .Would have saved some page turning. Listed as an option for the 8 is the Lyman #7 Windguage Target Front Sight. It is pictured on page 55 . I think this is what you have minus the globe. Possibly the original globe was broken. It may be stamped Lyman in the dovetail slot or on the bottom. You may want to remove it and take a look. Took a picture with my smarter than me phone of the listing in the book. You can see the piece of stamped steel that is folded with hole at bottom on the right side is the same as yours.

Hey Joe,

I think your picture is pretty close to what I have. On close examination(?) of your picture and my picture, I can't see where a globe would have been attached. The sight post in your picture is definitely different from my post. I will get it out tomorrow and see if I can knock it out of the sight block and see if I can find a name on the dovetail. I also need to give it a good cleaning. I didn't think it was as dirty as those closeup pictures show.

What was the year of publication for your book. I can see a price and that would have been pretty steep back in those days.

Regards,

Jack

Jack,
Book published in 1998. The value given for a #7 was $150-$250. The value (not price)you saw in the photo was for the #17 sight that was on same page. The #7 is shown with an aperture and a pinhead. I`m wondering if what you have is a variation that isn`t shown with a more conventional blade and bead and without a globe. Remember about never saying never or always when dealing with these.
