Was the .300 Savage made in the Model 8?

Post by jack1653 » Thu Nov 26, 2009 6:54 pm

Howdy,

Here is another question from a guy who is still learning. I was talking with a guy the other day about the Remington Model 8. One thing led to another and he asked me if I had a Model 8 in the .300 Savage. I said "No, I didn't know they made a Model 8 in .300 Savage". He told me he had one. I did not argue the point, because I am still learning what is out there.

I was wondering, if he has one, is it a Remington factory built or could it be made from parts from a Model 8 and parts from the Model 81. I thought I would ask the question here before posting something on The Remington Society website. I have read where some guys have mixed components to come up with hybrids and could this be another? How safe would the "custom" built be? Are hybrid rifles something that novices should stay clear from buying?

I look forward to the answers on this topic!!

I know I saw a very early Model 8 at a gun show that had a factory repair code on it, and that was also chambered for .300 Savage. I have also heard about similar factory modifications being done after the Model 81 had became the standard Remington Autoloader being made. I think I remember talking to Mr. Henwood about the .300 Savage Model 8s and I think I remember that he told me some Model 8s in .35 were probably factory converted to .300 Savage and that some of these are still rattling around out there. So don't immediately dismiss a Model 8 in .300 Savage as a "Bubba" shade tree gun smith special. If the gun looks like factory work and it has a factory repair code from the late 30s or 40s, it could be a factory conversion.

You won't find a Model 8 that left the factory new chambered in .300Sav. Hardrada55's on the money.

Ran into this myself with a Model 8 owner whose rifle was chambered in 300 Savage. What should I look for on the rifle for repair markings?

You are in good hands w/ Hardrada55 and 81police they know what they are talking about. I'll always be a novice but I too enjoy learning so I did a little research in Henwood's book:
- Model 8's stopped in 1939 but that doesn't mean they were totally out of parts.
- 300 Savage was added in 1940
- Repair markings: "As with the Model 8, (Model 81 will have) additonal codes combined with the numeral '3' indicate a return to the factory for repair or refinishing; or '2' for 'parts order barrel'. Repair codes are stamped immediately above the manufacturing code." (Usually found on the left side of the barrel jacket head just above the forearm.)

And, I've found that the pieces inside the barrel (springs, etc.) are the same size for the 300Sav as are used for the 35Rem.

Thanks, Mitch,

I always like getting additional information. It helps with the understanding of these rifles.

Thanks,

Jack
