Model 8 Value

Hello everyone! I'm new to the forums. I found the forums because I found a model 8 in a gun shop near where I live. I'd never seen something quite like this rifle and so it prompted a lot of curiosity.

The rifle is chambered in 32 Rem
The rifle is probably about 80% with some bluing gone on the receiver in patches.
The rifle has a tang sight, a rear sight that has two flip up sights (one V one a white diamond). The front is just a bead.
There is no engraving on it though it does seem to have nice checkering and very pretty wood.

The gun comes with some ammo brass and dies.

I checked the serial # against your #s here and that indicated it was made around 1915 or so.
I'm not sure what level of rifle it is (my understanding is that this particular model came in different grades?)

I'm not sure what it's worth as I hear stories about some being 200.00 and some being near 3k.
the price on this is 799.00 and the owner generally charges high prices.

What would a fair price on this rifle be? It is supposedly functional.

Thanks
Pat

The model 8 you describe may be a grade 3 or C grade. It depends on what the checkering looks like. I do not have my Henning book handy to tell you the exact characteristics of a C grade but I would expect a checkered stock with pistol grip and cap. As far as price goes 799 is not to far out of line. The tang sight if it is mounted by a single screw and curved base(see pic at the top of this forum page), lyman or Marbles, go for $100-200 on Ebay, The dies are worth at least $50 and brass can go for .50 apiece. So that would put the price of the gun at $600-650 which is a bit more than grade 1s go for. If it is really a grade C and has all original parts that is probably an excellent price. For comparison, I just paid 350.00 for a model 8 in 35 rem with a king rear sight, no buttplate, little to no finish left, and a sling mount braised to the barrel jacket. It is a definite "shooter grade" with sharp pit free rifling.

I have 8s in 25, 30, and 35 rem so the 32 caliber is not one I presently load. Some people will call 32 a rare caliber and want you to pay more some will call it obsolete and expect to pay less. It all depends on your point of view. At least with dies and brass, if you reload you know you can shoot it.

Thanks for the reply! Is there somewhere on it that will indicate the actual model? A C stamped on it somewhere?

thanks
