Shooting a Model 8 in competition?

Post by Kynoch »

We have local matches with targeting similar to 3 gun Cowboy Action Shooting where we can shoot almost anything designed prior to 1917. I was thinking a Model 8 might be suitable to shoot in such competition? Its main competitors would be older lever and bolt action rifles. How difficult is it to locate the police magazines and fit them to a non-police Model 8? Any information would be deeply appreciated.

if you wanted to be period correct the magazines were not designed until the late 1920's (at the very earliest) but more likely the early 1930's.

If that's no big deal, then finding a magazine is the first step, and biggest hurdle. Expect to pay between $800-1000 for a magazine alone. There are a couple solitary magazines on Rock Island Auction right now, one Model 8 and one Model 81. Converting a standard Model 8 (or 81) to a 15 round police magazine requires some know how. Pete Verschneider has done several. His member name here is 2pversters.

The article below is good reading regarding Police 8/81's,

Have you considered using a standard 8/81 and some stripper clips in competition? That would be pretty cool too.
