Model 8 at auction
Model 8 at auction
Howdy.
Was wondering if anyone saw the "non engraved" Model 8 with what appeared to be Premier grade checkering and wood. It went for ROCKEFELLER money " you'll get the pun if you saw the auction "...

Yes, I saw that rifle. What was the selling price?
I guess if it was engraved with the name "Rockefeller", it must be worth a lot. Maybe a Rockefeller bought it!

Re: Model 8 at auction
I guess that the fact of the rifle having really nice wood does support the fact that whoever owned it, special ordered it and had some money to invest in a rifle. But there was no paperwork supporting the fact that it came from the Rockefeller family, just the engraving. But it is possible that the buyer knew in advance of the rifle's history, too, or that photos may exist.
At any rate, it is a very nice rifle, I think that the new owner is going to enjoy it. I know I sure would. It looked to be in perfect shape.
It is great to see these rifles being appreciated. (Double entendre intended).

Re: Model 8 at auction
Well I bought the rifle ! I fell in love with it at first sight. The Rockefeller name really interested me and the beauty of the wood reeled me in. The original owner was Percy Avery Rockefeller born in 1878 and died in 1934. He was the nephew of oil giant John D. Rockefeller and he was a board of director for many big companies of his day but the most important in my mind was "Remington Arms Co" !!!! He was also a leader / active member of the "Overhills Golf and Hunt Club in North Carolina. They were big on Fox hunting with horses and hounds hence the smaller 25-35 caliber of the rifle. The club was eventually sold to US Army and was incorporated into the now " Fort Bragg".
I was surprised the bidding went as high as it did but I figured you have to buy them when you see them LOL !!! I picked the gun up in person and the gracious seller with me took off stocks and found they were not serialized to the receiver which instantly turned me off but in the back of my mind I kept thinking Rockefeller and # 6 premier grade wood. We haggled a bit and seller did give me the option of backing out but I wanted the gun. The seller did however knock off a considerable amount of money from the gun. I went home happy in one way but nervous in another. It wasn't until late that night that I stumbled onto the information above !!! Being on the board of directors for Remington Arms Co and being an avid Fox hunter put a smile on my face. That is it so far !!!! John Taylor PS I tried to post some new pics of the gun but files are to big.

Good job finding out what you have so far. It's really nice knowing some of the history of a rifle.
The wood on that gun is exceptional.
Look forward to hearing more from you on the forum.

Re: Model 8 at auction
With that history, I would not be bothered a bit by the stocks not being serialized to the rifle. It is obvious that a man of means like Mr. Rockefeller, who was also a Remington board member had the stocks upgraded. I think that it is still "original", even though the numbers don't match. I think you have a good eye, and a great rifle. Congratulations, and I look forward to seeing more photos.
Nice job on researching that history, too!

Re: Model 8 at auction
Thanks MinnesotaDan for the kind words !! I felt very relieved when I found the information on the rifle. I am glad I went with my instincts and completed the sale as it was a little up in the air for a while. Hopefully I can dig up some more info in the future. I will post a couple more pictures soon but I need to shrink them down first. Thanks again ! John Taylor

It's a beautiful and interesting gun!
Do you recall the serial number on the stock set?

Re: Model 8 at auction
The forearm is 22093 with a 6 and butt stock is 2244 with a 6. Maybe he owned the gun before he became a board member for Remington arms and then had the stocks put on ?? Going to be hard to figure out. Forearm stock number is pretty close to serial on receiver. John Taylor

Re: Model 8 at auction
Guns are only 335 serial numbers apart. Checkering pattern looks the same ?? Maybe my stocks had some sort of flaws and the F-Grade buyer didn't like them and Percy Rockefeller got them cheap ?? LOL !! I will be watching for others thoughts. The other thing I was wondering is where the "P.A.Rockerfeller" engraving was done ? Remington or family jeweler ? Could have been either but my guess would be Remington same time as stocks were fit to the gun. Thanks !! John PS Below is some of info I found on him.

Re: Model 8 at auction
Maybe the rifle was a presentation to Mr. Rockefeller for his service on, or retirement from the Remington Board of Directors. It could be that it was a last minute type thing, where they (Remington) took a standard rifle, swapped out the stocks to make it presentation worthy, and engraved his name on it to personalize it for him. It would not be like they had engraved rifles laying around, but they might have had a nice stock set to put on it, hence the numbers don't match. Do we know of any other board member's rifles and if they were ever presented one?
Just a theory of course.
And yes, that is a beautiful F grade! Wow.

It would be interesting to see the numbering on the F grade's stock set. Super interesting.

Re: Model 8 at auction
So Cam do you own that beautiful Rifle serial # 22093 ??? If not would it be possible to at least find out serial number under forearm ?? It would be an interesting observation to me ! Thanks John Taylor
Re: Model 8 at auction
Hi John, I do not own that rifle. I keep databases on all kinds of 8 & 81's and had this one on file. I didn't, unfortunately, retain the auction details

Boy I would love to see the number on that fore end !!!! What do you make of it ? You think that fore end might also have 22093 on it ? Might never know. Oh well thanks for gettin back to me. John Taylor
Re: Model 8 at auction
I think there are several possibilities none of which necessarily have greater evidence than the other.
Do I think rifle #22093 has matching wood? My guess would be it does
I think your rifle got a wood upgrade, at the Remington factory, with whatever they had on hand. Instead of cutting checkering on a stock-set specific to your gun, I think they grabbed whatever wood was already made and ready.
These are my GUESSES only. The true story is lost with time.
