72 year old Model (81) followed me home

Post by Trepang »

This 8/81 business is addictive!!!!

Picked up a 1949 Model 81 in .35 Rem today. Almost mint condition. Came from an Upstate New York consignment shop and had a chance to talk to the previous owner. The story goes that the original owner bought it, put it away, got sick and died without ever having shot it. Years go by, widow dies, estate being liquidated and the guy I bought it from picked it up. He said he shot about 10 rounds through it and put it away as well. If that’s the case in 72 years, it’s only had 10 rounds through it since it was new. Bluing is 99.9%, stock is exceptional with minimal handling and safe hickeys. The seller also let me have 6 boxes of Remington 200 grain soft-core for $20 a box - said he didn’t need it anymore.

Hey Trepang,

You did very well! Those are two good looking rifles. We seldom see rifles of this age in such good condition. You should have some good shooting with these rifles. Congratulations and welcome to the forum. Be careful that you don’t come down with “jackitis “😲😲😲

Hey Jack,I think it’s too late! Congrats on a great find. The 35 is definitely taking over as the king in M8/81s. If you need any advice about hunting or reloading this caliber, send me an email.
Thanks for your time,
Roger

Thanks guys. It all started with me reading Frank Hamer's biography.

No on the lookout for a Model 11 12 gauge with a riot barrel.
