Here are the two rifles I bought this weekend. No big bargains to brag about just 2 neat rifles. The first one is a 1947 81 in .300 savage with a checkered stock. No B stamp, all serial number matches. I believe it has a repair code stamp. The second one is a 1910 Remington Auto-loading Rifle in .25 Remington that is how I want a rifle that old to look (used). It has a funky fuzzy butt plate and some bruises but I love the way it looks. Here are just a few pictures. When the weather clears up I'll take some outdoor pic's.

nice pair of shooters! The custom checkering on the 81 is very tasteful and looks well done. Bet it's got a nice feel to it too. Give us a range report once you get around to it!

Thanks for the comments. The 81 serial number is in the 32,000's with 2 repair codes OSS3 and XTT3. It is all matching and has a marbles tang peep. The pre-8 serial number is in the 20,000's. The butt is a piece of thick leather. No number on the forearm. The barrel shroud is a wee bit loose. With the barrel on and tightened down the shroud will still rotate till the forearm is installed. The wood has some nice grain. I believe the tang sight is a layman. I really like the wear on this lady.

So the serial number dates the 81 to 1947. Repair code OSS3 date would be July 1947 and repair XTT3 code would be December 1948. Did Remington keep records of these repairs?

sounds like a loose barrel jacket to jacket head connection. This can be repaired.

Thanks Cam. I will search to see how it needs to be fixed. I think I'm more proud of the pre-8 in .25 than the 81 in .300. I know what both rounds are capable of dealing with Savage 99's. I have a Savage 1899 SRC in 25-35. It is a very pleasant round to shoot, low recoil and not all that loud. I will be getting some .25 rem reloading supplies in the near future.

Both of these rifles function flawlessly. The 300 savage is a thumper and the .25 rem is a joy to shoot. Which is exactly what I expected from shooting my savage 99's in 300 and 23-35.
