FS: Rear Picatinny Red Dot Mount.

So I made a couple of these picatinny bases for our Model 8 or 81 autoloading rifles. It should be a reversible modification primarily for the addition of a red-dot or reflex sight. You should be able to use your factory nut-plate and rear sight screws to install it.

I'm asking $40 shipped (lower 48). If you think that's unreasonable, feel free to make an offer instead.

I prefer USPS money orders but if you're in a hurry I can do paypal if you pick up the fees.

*IMPORTANT*
I've been informed that the rear sight mount screws are not all the same. If your screw heads are NOT smaller than ~.245" OD I need to know to make the mount fit as intended!

More details:

These are 5 slots long but I can make them a little longer if you need. It's just that there's two little factory screws 5/8" apart holding everything on so I don't recommend going overboard. These bases are 6061 aluminum and partially anodized except where I machined them.

For me, using a 3-MOA Burris Fastfire III my sight picture is just were I need it for shooting off-hand on my M81. It should probably be lower for shooting prone. I could make the bases lower, but then you get into issues with the ~.270" long factory screws sticking up into the slots or the screws hitting the barrel inside the jacket. If the screws sticking up some into the slots is not an issue then I can make the bases shorter. I'm willing to work with you.

The bases' inside radius is a little smaller than .500" so its outside edges will ride the 1" diameter barrel jacket. While I don't think it's necessary, you can use some sand paper and a dowel (or a deep socket) to get the fit a little tighter or you can use a little bedding compound to fill the ~.007" gap. I do recommend a little blue loctite on the screws though.

I just got a model 8 a few months ago and I am wondering if this is something that you are still making? I have bad eyesight so using iron sights can be very difficult for me.

Sorry for the delay in reply, I've been traveling for the Christmas/New Year's holiday.

Yes, I have a few ready-made. I can ship Jan 6 when I get home.

Fred,

Would you be willing to make a longer one for mounting a scout type scope?

I didn't get a red dot for mine yet. Those Burris Fastfire III's seem to be out of stock everywhere. My son and I took the 81 out yesterday.
My son put his first three in the bullseye (3" x 2") at 50 yds with the peep type sights. I was lucky to get 1 out of 10 in the red. That front sight is just a blur.

Yes, I can make that. But I don't have any personal experience with scout scopes and would need some rough dimensions for overall length, and where you'd want the rail in relation to the barrel yoke/jacket head (or other reference point). Expected height above boreline would be a good reference too.

Excellent. I will work up some numbers next week.
I managed to find a Burris Fast Fire III. I will try that, but I don't think it will be much better.

Thanks
Jim

I ordered an out of production Weaver 4X scout scope and some rings. It may be a while before they arrive though.

Just my two cents, but I think it should be a bit longer, out beyond the hand guard, with a band of some sort around the barrel jacket. This way not too much weight is put on the two sight screws and one could mount a scout scope.
