1906 "no side spring" magazine disassembly (SOLVED)

Post by cantgrowup »

I just got a "first year" 1906 .38 Rem (SN 17xx) and am doing a complete teardown for cleaning and inspection. This is my first 8/81 that has no side magazine leaf springs. Obviously, the upper lips of the magazine box are curved in on both sides to retain the cartridge. However, I am having some difficulty getting the magazine follower out of the magazine body. I've gently tried depressing the follower and trying to twist the follower both ways, but it is not coming out as easily as all my other 8/81 magazine followers. I do not want to damage either the follower or the mag box, so can anyone give me some pointers on how to perform this early-style "no side spring" magazine disassembly? Thanks.

I DECIDED TO TINKER WITH IT SOME MORE. I USED A THIN PUTTY KNIFE TO GET DOWN ALONG SIDE THE FOLLOWER AND TILT IT ENOUGH TO WHERE THE NOSE OF THE FOLLOWER CAME UP OUT OF THE FRONT OF THE BOX. THEN I WAS ABLE TO JUST PULL THE FOLLOWER OUT OF THE FRONT OF THE BOX.
