Model 8 refinishing

Snagged a Model 8 in 32 Remington for $450 this weekend at a pawn shop. All serial numbers appear to be matching (1914 manufacture, serial 33xxx, two digit code on barrel "RP"), however extractor claw stamped "30". Would like to refinish stock but not wanting to reduce any future value. Handguard and stock do not match. Handguard has some kind of hard shiny finish that is peeling, however stock has gorgeous dark red/brown finish with beautiful dark grain lines (some staining near receiver tang and faintest sign of hairline crack. Custom pachymar buttpad stamped "toms Gun Shop, Grass Valley CA).

looking for finishing advice (do it/don't) and the process y'all would use. Been advised to use French Red stain on old rifles for color similarity, and have refinished a 1941 k kale mauser with tung oil

If the butt stock already has a recoil pad on it which I doubt if any did as OEM, then I see no reason to not refinish the stock.
