Ten minute barrel nut tool

After much use the double ended tool I purchased from Circle Branch years ago let me down. The small tip that fits in the hole of the barrel nut broke off on a particularly stubborn barrel nut.
I put the rifle away thinking I would repair the tool by brazing a piece of a 3/16 drill bit or punch back on the tool.
I however came up with the following.
I rummaged around in my bolt bin and came up with a large screw eye. The hole was just the right size for the barrel nut to fit in. Then I drilled a hole as shown to allow a 3/32 pin to pass thru and engage the barrel nut hole. I also added a piece of rubber hose over the threads for the handle.
This worked great, just be careful not to contact the barrel with pin. Now that I know this will work I am going to redrill and thread hole in the screw eye for a dog point set screw. Probably 8 or 10/32.

Since I am not sure how to edit my post I am going to correct my mistake this way.
I had originally planned on using a piece of a 3/32 drill bit and not 3/16 to repair my old tool.

Hey, I love that eye-bolt idea. I wish I had thought of that. Looks like about the cheapest way to make a homemade tool for our purpose.
I have attached a few pictures of the tool I modified to make a barrel nut remover. It will work on all calibers.
I bought a pair of nut splitter tools at Tractor Supply on clearance for $5.00 and gave the larger one to my son. I used the smaller one to make the tool to use to remove the barrel nut. I removed the splitting chisel from the tool and turned the end down to a pin just under the size of the hole in the barrel nut. I made sure the pin was not long enough to get in and damage the barrel threads. I just ran into a very over tightened barrel nut on a 32 cal and had to help loosen by hitting the tool with a plastic faced mallet. It came loose. This tool should hold up very well in that the part that has the pin is hardened steel.
If anyone is interested in one of these, let me know. All depends on the price I would have to pay for a nut splitter, but I think I would be able to sell these around $20.00 with $3.00 shipping.
I am retired and so I try to make a buck when I can.

I purchased Rob's nut splitter modification and let me say that it works GREAT. I have a Model 8 circa 1909 (based on serial number) and I don't think the barrel nut had been removed in a hundred years. Thanks to Rob's tool ( and a liberal dose of Liquid wrench) I was able to remove it after some "gentle persuasion." It took the better part of an hour to get through the rust and crap that was stuck to the nut, but the process was successful
I love the wrench! It worked great for me and I have to send a huge THANKS to Rob for his invention. Awesome!!

I inherited a model 81 Woodmaster and trying to figure away to remove the barrel nut. Is he still making this or does anyone know where I can purchase a tool to break down the barrel assemble. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I still make the tool, but the price is now $25.00 shipped. The price of the nut splitter has gone up. Remember I bought the first nut splitters on clearance.

Any idea how I remove the other piece? Are people just able to purchase a spanner wrench? I would be intrested in that tool though. You have a website or just PayPal? Or something.
