I measured my M81 35Rem barrel at Ø.600-24 for the nut. You'd do better with a lathe I think. Custom taps/dies are not inexpensive.

Yeah, we have wasted a lot of time & research, I don't think anyone is making the taps or dies now. And know that many of the threads were designed before anyone dreamed of SAE standards.

About any job shop should be able to cut a steel stub to fit the barrel nut threads snugly, then cut some flutes in the stub allowing for debris someplace to go to. Should be good enough to clean out existing threads. One would think that that sort of work would be fairly inexpensive to complete. It pays to shop around.
