Hello everybody, my name is Luke. I’m a mechanic is the National Guard, I’ve been
in for the last 16 years.
I’ve been interested in Model 8’s for quite awhile and finally jumped on board very recently. I purchased one on gunbroker last week “waiting on it to be shipped to my FFL” and an additional one yesterday at a semi local gun show.
The one I got from the gun show is a standard grade Model 8 in 35 Remington in original condition made around 1917. It had a receiver mounted sight at some point in its life and I must remedy the holes with appropriate filler screws. I spent some time last night cleaning the barrel and spot cleaning the receiver. I was a little worried about the barrels condition “this firearm must’ve been in and out of the soft case a lot over the years between gun shows” due to some fuzzy crud. It cleaned up beautiful and shiny, no pitting at all. I tested it out today and it worked flawlessly!
The second is the one that I’m patiently waiting on is a standard grade that’s been refinished. It sports a round knob pistol grip chambered in 25 Remington with marbles peep, front sight and a filler blank in place of factory rear sight, this one was made around 1914. What helped me choose this obscure chambered one was the fact that it comes with 40 loaded cartridges and an additional 220 pieces of brass with dies.

Hey Luke,
Welcome to the forum. Thank you for your service!
You are at the right spot to learn about these rifles. The 35 is a good round and you can still buy ammo for it. The 25 is a good round but finding ammo is tough. Reloading can help sove that problem.
We will look forward to seeing some additional pictures. If you have any questions, just ask and someone here will provide a response.
Regards,

Good looking guns, and you've got the cartridge spectrum covered, 25 and 35. The 25 sure is a fun gun to shoot.

Noticed you got one with the top-toe buttplate that is a good find. & in 25 Rem, had one almost the same & had to trade for a Inglis. It too has JMB designs. Good luck with the pair, watch out though, they'll soon be whining for their relatives. Then infect you with Jackitis

Hello. I’m not far from Howard, I live in Lock Haven. Some range time would be fun with a fellow enthusiast. I’m currently in Poland “deployed”, so the range will have to wait until next year.DirtyHarry44 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 29, 2019 2:48 pm Hey I'm from Howard myself! (Between State College and Lock Haven)

I agree this site is full of good people and lots of info.

Thank you. Yes I was unsure if the butt plate was original to the rifle at first. Upon research and acquiring the Henwood book I realized it was original.Phyrbird wrote: ↑Sat Mar 30, 2019 2:48 pm Noticed you got one with the top-toe buttplate that is a good find. & in 25 Rem, had one almost the same & had to trade for a Inglis. They already have another brother! My father picked up a 30 Remington Model 8 the other weekend at a gun show for me. It’s a real nice piece, full marbles sights “tang, rear and front”. The front sight is the marbles improved version, has the bead on top of a peep hole.
I’m hunting for a Model 8 in 32 Remington now! Ha

Be careful Hibby. Around here we talk of a sickeness called "Jackitis". It's a disorder where 8/81 collecting becomes uncontrollable. There is no known cure, just ask forum member Jack1653!

Haha. I may just have this disorder...
My overall plan is to find the 32 Remington to complete the Model 8 series, also a Model 81 in 300 Savage.
That’s at least stage one of my goal!
Re: New recruit from Central Pa
Hey Hibby,
No doubt about it! You definitely are showing the strong symptons of “jackitis”. I can recall those early years when all I wanted was one more to complete a set. Just one more and I will be satisfied, I thought. WRONG!! Many years have past and every once in a while I get a relapse and have to get just one more. You would think that after a couple dozen rifles it would end, but it doesn’t. Just keep up with your goals on collecting these fine rifles and you won’t be disappointed. Don’t forget to look at the FN 1900 as an addition to your collection.
Kindest Regards,

25 and 30 are definitely the easiest shooting of any of these rifles. 35 has more thump and I find that about 30 rnds is about all the fun I can stand.
