Hello all, from sunny southern Arizona

Post by Tucsontony »

I now own my Grandfathers 1906 model 8 in 32 rem with some ammo. Happy camper here since I used it to down a few whitetail in my younger years. I was wondering if low sn's are special. Sn is 1888 with the 3 mark after because I know the barrel had been replaced around 1930. Will post som pics under Tucsontony

Hi again
Did not know how to edit my OP but this might work. I tried to put a pic up but it says it to big over 700 kb. Will try to do something to fix the pic to be smaller. That SN was from under the barrel where it meets the reciver. The side of the reciver has no markings

Hey Tucsontony! Thanks for sharing a piece of your family's history.

Your rifle is #18883, manufactured in 1910. The barrel assembly is from rifle # 35527, and was manufactured in 1915.

Looks like y'all have taken good care of that ole'springpole :D

Just ordered 5 boxes of ammo from site called. Ammo-one since I don't want to use any of the collectibles that I got with it. Hope the ammo works good.

Shot 10 rounds of the new ammo and it cycled flawlesly, but I don't think it is very accurate.

I was playing around with my Smith/Wesson 629 44mag at 30yrds with standerd paper plate's 10" diamater. I can put all 6 on paper if I take my time. Put 5 rounds in the springpole and only hit 3, and those were all over the plate, thought OK I was just thinking about it cycling so tried 5 more, but the same results. It was all done standing offhand. Had my Marlin 336 in 35rem along and proceded, with the same setup, to put 5 rounds in 2 inches. I am going to bring a few round of my old factory ammo next time to compare. The new ammo are cast bullets and feel light to me and they did not eject out as far as I remember from shooting it about 20yrs ago. Box says 170gr but I'm thinking they are loaded to be very safe to avoid any kind of damage of the firearm.

Welcome and that's a nice old rifle. My kind of old Remington! I think its a safe bet those cast loads are not a good match for your rifle. When it comes to cast bullets a good match to the bore and the right velocity are very important to good groups. All of my old 8/81's have been at least minute of deer out to 100 yards and a few are better yet. I don't have any in 32 but some of the guys here I am sure will give you some good advice on getting her shooting with the right stuff. :)
