Over this last Thanksgiving weekend my father decided he wanted to let his three sons claim any of the guns in his collection while all of us were together. I choose the Model 81, a gun I had always admired, although I admit I didn’t know anything about the model’s history at the time. I was very pleased to find the web site and forum with information about the Model 8 & 81.
The gun originally belonged to my maternal grandfather. It’s chambered in .300 savage, and from the date code I see it was manufactured in June of 1949. As I remember I took it out once in the early 80’s to fire a few rounds, but otherwise it probably hasn’t been fired since well before my grandfather passed away in 1971.
It came with several boxes of ammunition that are probably as old as the gun is, supported by the fact that one of the boxes has a “11/15/50” date written on it in pencil.

Sir, welcome aboard. You made a great choice with the M-81.Any family heirloom gun is a true treasure. I have 3 of my Grandfather's guns. Only one is a JMB designed gun but they are all treasured heirlooms to me.
