Just bought my first Model 8.
It looks to be in great condition.
Caliber is .35 Remington.
Serial number has it born in 1908 but barrel corresponds to 1948 with a 3.
From what little research I've done so far, it looks like it was sent in '48 for refurbishment?
My intentions are to hunt with it using cast bullets.
Thanks for all the resources!

Hey badgerblaster!
Sounds to me like you found a dandy Model 8!
The date code with the "3" at the end represents a repair code, so this could be anything really.
If you have any success hunting please share some pictures with us!

My Gr D has the same kind of markings. With a Model 81 barrel sleeve on a Model 8 circa 07
It appears Remington did some barrel jacket repairs in the late forties.

Re: Hello from Wisconsin
Badger, Welcome, with a 35 Remington you have one of the best deer cartridges available. I have killed several deer and one antelope with a 35 Remington using a Marlin 336. I have a Model 8 in 35 but have not hunted with it yet. If you don't have a suitable mold I would recommend the RCBS 35-200-FN. In my experience you would need a muzzle velocity of about 1600 fps with a 200 gr. bullet to cycle the action. Also ambient temperature also has some effect on function. I worked up a load that functioned fine in Summer at 70 degrees and above but in October a when the temperature was in the 30's it did not function reliably. My model 8 has a curved steel butt plate and recoil can be quite painful. I have never noticed recoil when shooting at deer but sighting and working up loads it was like shooting a pitchfork. That is why I prefer the Marlin. Should have gotten a slip on recoil pad.

Thanks for the replies.
That's good information regarding the model 8 being temperature sensitive.
Last years opening day temp was in single digits here.
I better get going on this project so I can get some rounds down range while it's still cold out.
I was lucky enough to find a couple of boxes of Remington ammo where I bought the gun. One box was older and had a receipt in it from 1977 for $6.79. Times have really changed!! At least I have some brass to work with.
The 35 Rem is new to me. I'll get that RCBS mold, some gas checks, a sizer, dies and I'm in business.
One thing always seems to lead to another.
